Fitchburg State Claims Fourth At MASCAC Championships

Women place fourth with 48 points: Men earn fourth with 82 points

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. (April 27, 2014) – The Fitchburg State men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams competed at the 2014 New England Alliance/MASCAC Championship this afternoon hosted by UMass Dartmouth.

Leading the way on the men’s side was senior Pat Conaty (Southington, Conn.), claiming top honors in the pole vault with an Alliance/MASCAC championship and ECAC qualifying vault of 4.50 meters, while adding a seventh place finish in the long jump with a mark of 5.80 meters. Freshman Brian Amaral (Tewksbury, Mass.) was also strong, placing first in the 5,000 meter with time of 15:45.70.

On the track, newcomer Brandon Hannon (Pelham, N.H.) placed third overall in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a DIII NE qualifying time of 10:00.46, while classmate Matt Cuomo (Carlisle, Mass.) put forth a pair of personal best times in the 1500m (4:08.96) to place third overall, while adding a time of 16:38.16 in the 5000m. Junior Jim Quinlan (North Andover, Mass.) was also strong in the 800m (5th) and 1500m (6th), registering times of 2:01.24 and 4:15.03 respectively. 

Freshman Chauncey Beatty (Waldorf, Md.) placed third overall in the 800m with a personal best time of 1:59.17, while sophomore Richard Ethier (Shirley, Mass.) also posted a PR time of 1:59.66 to place fourth in the event.

Sophomore Tim Allen (Methuen, Mass) turned in a solid time of 16:58.55 in the 5000m, setting a new personal best in the process, while in the 10k senior Larry Teague (Tyngsboro, Mass.) (4th) and Allen (6th) registered times of 35:26.31 and 35:46.27. Newcomer Vincent Tevnan (Boscawen, N.H.) ran a personal best time of 37:17.23 with an eighth place effort in the 10,000 meter.

In the field, junior Ethan Gorecki (Winchendon, Mass.) added an fourth place finish in the javelin with a toss of 47.57m, while sophomore Akhiel Willis (Acton, Mass.) was also solid for the Falcons, placing third overall in the triple jump 12.78 meters.

Freshman Patryk Backiel (Fairhaven, Mass.) placed third overall in the pole vault with a DIII New England qualifying vault of 4.00 meters, while junior Maximin Rocheleau (Winchendon, Mass.) (3.55m) and Hannon (2.80m) placed fifth and eighth respectively in the pole vault to round out the top performers on the men’s side.

Paving the way for the women was junior Rebecca McClure (Lyndeborough, N.H.) placing second overall in the pole vault, with a DIII New England qualifying vault of 3.05m, while classmate Arthina Robert (Lynn, Mass.) registered a personal best and DIII New England qualifying time of 12.67 seconds in the 100 meter dash as well as adding a PR time of 27.60 in the 200m (11th).

Junior Jenae Harrison (Sioux Falls, S.D.) put forth a personal best time of 2:26.10 to place third overall in the 800 meter, while senior Samantha Wilkinson (Wakefield, Mass.) followed in fourth place with PR time of 2:27.33.

Sophomore Jessica Mangan (Everett, Mass.) placed fifth overall in the 10,000 meter with an outstanding time of 43:53.85 to set a personal best in the process, while classmate Elizabeth Ward (Ashby, Mass.) placed sixth overall in the event with time of 43:57.00.

In the 100 meter, freshman Morgan Steele (Somerset, Mass.) and sophomore Shamira Nambafu (Framingham, Mass.) registered personal best times of 14.20 and 14.39 seconds, while junior Mary Wooten (Lisbon, Maine) put forth a pair of PR’s in the 100m hurdles (19.31) and 200 meter (28.58).

The 4x100 meter relay team of Robert, sophomore Shaunna Lizek (Lunenburg, Mass.), classmate Angelica Picucci (Leominster, Mass.) and junior Gina Angelini (Fitchburg, Mass.) placed third overall with a time of 54.74, while the 4x400m relay team of Angelini, Wooten, senior Stephanie Irvin (Malden, Mass.) and sophomore Alexis Podedworny (Webster, Mass.) posted a time of 4:42.31 with a fourth place effort.

The women’s 4x800 meter relay team of Harrison, Wilkinson, newcomer Stephanie Stearns (Mystic, Conn.) and classmate Grace Morrissey (Millis, Mass.) also ran well, placing third overall with time of 10:54.21, while Stearns added a personal best time of 5:27.44 in the 1500 meter.

Freshman Emilee Felton (Millers Falls, Mass.) placed fourth overall in the javelin with a throw of 31.52 meters, while junior Sarah Elliot (East Meadow, N.Y.) rounded out the top performers on the women’s side, placing sixth overall in the discus with a toss of 30.35m.

The Fitchburg State men’s and women’s track and field teams will be in action again next weekend as members compete at the Division III New England Championships hosted by Springfield College, starting on Friday at 4 p.m..
