Fitchburg State Track Earns Fourth In Pre-Season Poll

Men finish with ten points in Men’s Poll; Women place fourth with 11 points

FITCHBURG, Mass. (March 19, 2014) – The Fitchburg State men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams were recently selected fourth in the 2014 MASCAC Pre-Season Coaches Poll as announced by the league office Wednesday afternoon.

The Owls of Westfield State University and the Bears of Bridgewater State University are the pre-season picks to win their respective 2014 MASCAC Men’s & Women’s Outdoor Track & Field championships in a vote of the league’s coaches. 

Bridgewater State captured three of the five first place votes on the women’s side to amass 23 points and narrowly outdistance runner-up Westfield State’s total of 21 points that included the two remaining first place votes. Worcester State followed in third place with 15 points, while Fitchburg State and Massachusetts Maritime rounded out the poll in fourth and fifth place with 11 and five points, respectively.

On the men’s side, Westfield State claimed three first place votes for a total of 22 points to top Worcester State, which amassed 20 points, including one first place vote. Receiving the final first place vote, Bridgewater State followed in third place with 18 points, while Fitchburg State and Massachusetts Maritime rounded out the poll in fourth and fifth place with ten and five points, respectively.

The Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference, the nation’s oldest Division III men’s and women’s playing conference, has a rich and storied tradition of competitive success while celebrating excellence in the classroom. MASCAC member schools include Bridgewater State University, Fitchburg State University, Framingham State University, MCLA, Massachusetts Maritime Academy, Salem State University, Westfield State University and Worcester State University. Two other institutions, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and Plymouth State University, are affiliate members of the conference in the sport of men’s ice hockey, while Western Connecticut State University joined the conference as an affiliate member in the sport of football for the 2013-14 academic year.
