Fitchburg State Competes At Corsairs Classic

Mangan posts pair of post-season qualifying times for women: Conaty and Backiel paces men with DIII marks in the pole vault

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. (April 5, 2014) – The Fitchburg State men’s and women’s outdoor track & field teams were in action this afternoon as they competed at the 2014 UMass Dartmouth Corsairs Classic.

For the men, junior Pat Conaty (Southington, Conn.) notched post-season marks in the pole vault with a height of 4.15 meters to qualify for DIII NE’s, while freshman Brian Amaral (Tewksbury, Mass.) recorded a DIII New England qualifying time of 33:02.30 in the 10K with a second place finish.

The 4x100 meter relay team of freshman Trenton Garlington (Holbrook, Mass.), sophomore Akhiel Willis (Acton, Mass.), classmate Charles De La Rosa (Westfield, Mass.) and Conaty registered a season best time of 44.82 to qualify for DIII NE’s, while the men’s 4x400m relay team of freshman Matt Cuomo (Carlisle, Mass.), classmate Brandon Hannon (Pelham, N.H.), junior Jim Quinlan (N. Andover, Mass.) and Amaral also qualifying for DIII New England’s with a solid time of 3:36.34.

Freshman Vincent Tevnan (Boscawen, N.H.) registered a MASCAC qualifying time of 39:11.16 in the 10,000 meter, while sophomore Tim Allen (Methuen, Mass.) was also strong in the 3000m steeplechase with a post-season time of 11:25.48.

On the track, De La Rosa (11.52) and Garlington (11.62) both qualified for MASCAC’s in the 100 meter dash, while sophomore Richard Ethier (Shirley, Mass.) and Quinlan notched post-season times of 2:03.98 and 2:03.27 respectively in the 800 meter.

In the 400m hurdles, freshman Nicholas Levenson (Halifax, Mass.) (1:00.70) and junior Ethan Gorecki (Winchendon, Mass.) (1:03.73) qualified for MASCAC’s, while Levenson also ran a post-season qualifying time of 17.58 in the 110 meter hurdles.

In the 5000 meter, sophomore Michael Martin (Gardner, Mass.) put forth a strong personal best and MASCAC qualifying time of 18:04.80, while sophomore Zachary Levenson (Canton, Mass.) posted a PR time of 18:25.40.

In the field, freshman Patryk Backiel (Fairhaven, Mass.) placed second overall in the pole vault with a DIII NE qualifying mark of 4.00 meters, while Willis (6.04m), N. Levenson (5.65m) and sophomore Kristopher Tardy (Holyoke, Mass.) (5.47m) notched MASCAC qualifying marks in the long jump to round out the top Fitchburg State performances on the men’s side.

On the women’s side, sophomore Jessica Mangan (Everett, Mass.) led the way, turning in a MASCAC qualifying time of 22:31.45 in the 5000 meter, while also improving upon her post-season qualifying in the 1500m (5:58.46).

Junior Rebecca McClure (Lyndeborogh, N.H.) put forth a strong effort in the pole vault with a DIII New England qualifying mark of 3.05 meter to place third overall, while junior Mary Wooten (Lisbon, Maine) collected a MASCAC qualifying time of 19.74 seconds in the 100 meter hurdles.

In the 100 meter dash freshman Morgan Steele (Somerset, Mass.) registered a post-season time of 14.50 seconds, while Shamira Nambafu (Framingham, Mass.) turned in a time of 14.60 to also qualify for MASCAC’s in the event.

On the track, newcomer Stephanie Stearns (Mystic, Conn.) collected a MASCAC qualifying time of 2:40.83 in the 800 meter, while senior Karollynn Wickless-Adams (Lansdale, Penn.) rounded out the top efforts for the women’s squad, registered a solid time of 2:47.61 (800m) in her first race of the season. 

The Fitchburg State men’s and women’s outdoor track & field teams return to action on Saturday as they compete at the 2014 Wildcat invitational host by the University of New Hampshire starting at 11 a.m.
