BRANDEIS SWEEPS DOUBLEHEADER

Fitchburg, Mass. - Brandeis University Swept a doubleheader from the Fitchburg State College softball team Thursday afternoon at Withington Field at Coolidge Park 9-0, 4-0.

Brandeis jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning of the first game, scoring a pair of runs on two errors and a RBI single by Chelsea Korp.

The Judges added single runs in the second, third and fourth innings as their lead swelled to 6-0 keyed by RBI singles by Korp, and Erin Ross and Kate Streilein.

Brandeis tacked on three more runs in the fifth inning to make the score 9-0, scoring a run on a wild pitch, and RBI singles by Erin Thorn and Danielle Lavallee.

The Falcons were led offensively by Lauren Cucinotta and Eryne Cotter who each had a double. Streilein (16-3) pitched the complete game shutout, allowing five hits and striking out six. Bethany Stone (5-11) pitched the complete game for Fitchburg State, allowing nine runs, (6 Earned) on 13 hits and striking out two.

In the second game, Brandeis scored all four of its runs in the first inning. The Judges went ahead 1-0 on a wild pitch while Lavallee delivered a two-run single Samantha Worth added an RBI single. Meghan Callahan paced the Falcons with two hits.

Natalie Volpe earned the victory in the circle for the Judges, pitching a complete-game shutout, allowing three hits and striking out seven. Stephanie Melanson took the loss for Fitchburg State, pitching the complete game, allowing four runs (3 earned) on five hits.

Fitchburg State returns to action on Saturday when they travel to Buzzards Bay to take on the Buccaneers of Mass. Maritime Academy for a doubleheader beginning at Noon Brandeis returns to the field on Sunday travelling to Brunswick, Maine to take on the Polar Bears of Bowdoin College at Noon.
