Fitchburg State Posts First Victory Of 2009 Season

Falcons split doubleheader with RPI and Wooster

FORT MYERS, Fla. (March 10, 2009) - The Fitchburg State softball team earned its first victory of the 2009 season, splitting a Thursday afternoon doubleheader with RPI and Wooster. The Falcons suffered a 13-4 loss to RPI in game one, but rallied back to defeat Wooster 4-3 in the nightcap.

RPI 13, Fitchburg State 4 (5 innings)

In game one, Fitchburg State tallied six hits as junior Leigh Trzcinski (Worcester, Mass./South) and sophomore Karen Skoczylas (Palmer, Mass./Palmer) finished 1-for-4 with a single and RBI each. Senior Eryne Cotter (Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) and Alicia Rocco (Tewskbury, Mass./Tewksbury) were also solid with one base knock apiece.

Rookie pitcher Allison Cousins (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) suffered the loss (0-3) for the Falcons, tossing a complete game, five innings. Cousins yielded 13 runs on 11 hits it the contest, while striking out one and walking three.

Fitchburg State 4, Wooster 3

In game two, Fitchburg State battled to collect its first win of the season as sophomore pitcher Bethany Stone (Wells, Maine/Wells) hurled a complete game three-hitter. Stone picks up her first victory of the season (1-2), yielding only three earned runs with three strikeouts and five walks.

Leading the Fitchburg State offensive attack were Trzcinski and Skoczylas again, combining for a 5-for-9 effort, including two doubles and one RBI. Trzcinski paved the way, finishing 3-for-4 with two doubles and one RBI, while Skoczylas connected for two singles. Sophomore Meghan Callahan (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) chipped in with a base hit, while Cotter added an RBI.

Fitchburg State (1-5, 0-0 MASCAC) will be in action again tomorrow as it battles Eastern Nazarene and St. Joseph's starting at 9 a.m.
