Fitchburg State Falls To Westfield State

McKinnon finishes with four hits in Falcons MASCAC opener

WESTFIELD, Mass. (March 28, 2009) - Senior Jackie Mason (Florida, Mass./Drury High School) totaled six hits, six runs scored, four stolen bases and two RBI to lead Westfield State to a conference double header sweep of Fitchburg State, 10-4 and 8-3 this afternoon.

In the opener, Mason finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI to lead Westfield State, while junior Gia Calabrese (West Springfield, Mass./West Springfield) hit a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI.

Freshman Ashley McKinnon (Raynham, Mass./Bridgewater-Raynham) and sophomore Meghan Callahan (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) led the Fitchburg State game one offense with two hits apiece, while junior Leigh Trzcinski (Worcester, Mass./South) added one hit and one run scored.

Fitchburg State jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning but Westfield State totaled seven runs over the third and fourth innings to seal its victory. Mason and Calabrese ignited the Owls' four-run fourth inning with RBI singles, while Mason paced the Owls' attack in the fifth with a run scoring base-hit.

Pitcher Chelsea Sylvia (South Dartmouth, Mass./New Bedford) earned the victory for the Owls, scattering six hits and two earned runs while striking out 13. Freshman Allison Cousins (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) suffered the loss for the Falcons in the complete game effort, yielding seven earned runs on 15 hits.

Westfield State 8, Fitchburg State 3

In the second game, Mason continued her hot hitting, finishing 3-for-4 with three runs scored, three stolen bases and a triple, while senior Katie Gorman (Feeding Hills, Mass./Agawam) went 2-for-3 with a double.

Fitchburg State registered an 11 hit attack in game two, as Trzcinski connected for three hits and two runs scored. McKinnon was also solid for the Falcons with a 2-for-4 performance, while sophomore Karen Skoczylas (Palmer, Mass./Palmer) hit 2-for-4 with one run scored.

Mason gave Westfield State an early 1-0 lead with a theft of home in the first inning but Fitchburg State took a 2-1 third-inning lead on a two-run single by sophomore Lauren Donell (Ayer, Mass./Ayer). Westfield State responded in the home half of the frame with a six-run outburst led by Calabrese two-run double.

Senior pitcher Casey Riddell (Athol, Mass./Mahar Regional) did not issue a walk and struck out three in the complete game effort for the Owls, while sophomore Bethany Stone (Wells, Maine/Wells) allowed only five earned runs over six innings for Falcons.

Fitchburg State (3-13, 0-2 MASCAC) will be in action again on Monday as it travels to WPI at 3 p.m. Westfield State (8-4, 2-0 MASCAC) will host Becker College on Monday at 4 p.m.
