Falcons take game one, 15-7 in five innings; post 7-0 victory in game two

FITCHBURG, Mass. (April 6, 2010) - The Fitchburg State softball team won a pair of games this afternoon, sweeping Fisher College in non-conference action. The Falcons took game one by a score of 15-7, before posting a 7-0 victory in game two.

Fitchburg State 15, Fisher College 7 (Five Innings)

The Fitchburg State offense erupted for 15 runs on ten hits in game one to collect its first victory of the day.



Junior Lauren Donell connected for
her first collegiate homerun.

Leading the way for Fitchburg State in game one was junior Lauren Donell (Ayer, Mass./Ayer) who finished 2-for-3 at the dish with a homerun, three RBI and a pair of runs scored. Senior Leigh Trzcinski (Worcester, Mass./South) aided the Falcons attack with a perfect 3-for-3 performance, including a double, two runs scored and one RBI, while sophomore Ashley McKinnon (Raynham, Mass./Bridgewater-Raynham) went 1-for-3 with three RBI.

Senior Jackie Streeter (Westminster, Mass./Oakmont) paced the Fisher game one offense with a 1-for-3 game, posting a triple, two runs scored and two RBI, while freshman Amanda Davis (Dos Palos, Calif./Dos Palos) hit 1-for-3 with a triple, two runs scored and three RBI.

Fisher jumped out to a quick 4-0 in the top of the first inning highlighted by Streeter’s two run triple, but Fitchburg State rallied back to grab a 6-4 lead in the bottom of the second frame. Donell sparked the Falcons rally with a two run blast, while Trzcinksi added a RBI single.

 Fisher battled back taking 7-6 lead in the third but Fitchburg quickly ended the Fisher comeback with three runs in the bottom of the inning. The Falcons tacked on six more runs in the fifth frame, rounding out the game’s scoring with McKinnon’s two run base hit.

Junior Nicole Monroe (Townsend, Mass./N. Middlesex) picked up her first win as a Falcon (1-5, tossing a complete game two hitter, while striking out six. Sophomore Brittany Calderon (Rockland, Mass./Rockland took the loss for Fisher (2-8), yielding 15 runs (nine earned) on ten hits in 4.2 innings of work.

Fitchburg State 7, Fisher College 0

In game two, Fitchburg State scored seven runs on ten hits to clinch its third victory of the season and perform the season sweep over Fisher.

complete game shutout in game two.

Leading the way for Fitchburg State was McKinnon, going 3-for-3 with a triple, two runs scored and one RBI, while sophomore Kelly Cummings (Natick, Mass./Natick) added a 2-for-3 performance with a pair of singles and two RBI. Trzcinski was also strong on the offensive end, chipping in with her first homerun of the season.

Fitchburg State grabbed an early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the first inning and never looked back, rolling to an easy 7-0 victory. McKinnon put the Falcons on the board first with a RBI triple in the first, while Cummings and junior Kristen Love (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) added RBI base-hits in the fifth. The Falcons increased their lead to 7-0 in the sixth stanza as Trzcinski belted a solo homerun.

Fitchburg State senior Bethany Stone (Wells, Maine/Wells) picked up her first win of the year (1-4), pitching the complete game shutout. The veteran hurled allowed only six hits in the contest while striking out three. Freshman Mika Wilson (Chelsea, Maine/Cony) suffered the loss for Fisher (4-9), allowing seven runs on ten hits in the complete game effort.

Fitchburg State (3-11, 0-2 MASCAC) returns to action on Thursday as it host Regis College for a double-header at 3 p.m. Fisher College (6-18, 3-1 SC) returns to action on Thursday as well as they travel to Green Mountain College at 3 p.m.
