Falcons notched game one victory, 12-5; complete sweep with 11-1 victory in game two

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. (April 24, 2010) - The Fitchburg State softball team notched a MASCAC season-sweep over Mass-Maritime this afternoon as the Falcons posted a 12-5 victory in game on and a 11-1 win game two.

Senior Leigh Trzcinski (Worcester, Mass./South) led the Fitchburg State offense, rapping out six hits on the day as she became the Falcon’s all-time career hits leader. Trzcinski surpassed the previous record of 146 set by former standouts Alyssa Freda and Keri Kravertz early in the day, hitting 3-for-4 in game one with a double, three runs scored and one RBI.

In the opener, Fitchburg State snapped a 5-5 tie in the top of the fourth inning, using a five-run rally in scoring the final seven runs of the contest. Trzcinski sparked a Falcons’ scoring surge with a RBI base-knock in the fourth, while freshman Danielle Correia (W. Bridgewater, Mass./W. Bridgewater), junior Lauren Donell (Ayer, Mass./Ayer) and sophomore Ashley McKinnon (Raynham, Mass./Bridgewater-Raynham) also registered hits. Freshman Melissa Wadman (Dedham, Mass./Dedham) capped the Falcons scoring outburst with a sacrifice fly to center.

Donell aided Trzcinski on the offensive attack, driving in three runs with a pair of hits and three RBI, while Correia and junior Kristen Love (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) rounded out the Falcons 12-hit attack with three hits and two RBI apiece. In the circle, sophomore Allison Cousins (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) went the distance for Fitchburg State, earning her third victory of the season with the complete game effort. Cousins allowed five runs on 11 hits while fanning four Buccaneers.

Sophomore Holly McLaughlin (Belmont, Mass./Belmont) finished perfect 3-for-3 for Mass-Maritime as her two-run double in the third helped the Bucs overcome an early five-run deficit.  Freshman Janelle Beaulieu (Buzzards Bay, Mass./Buzzard Bay) also tallied a pair of hits, including a triple, while also tossing a complete game in the circle.

Fitchburg State 11, Mass-Maritime 1

In the nightcap, Fitchburg State jumped out to a 7-0 lead through its first two at-bats and silenced the Mass-Maritime bats as the Falcons picked up their first MASCAC series sweep.



Freshman Danielle Correia added five
hits on the afternoon, including a pair
in game two.

Correia and McKinnon lifted the Falcons in the early innings, driving in a pair of runs each through the first two frames, while Trzcinski tacked on back-to-back singles. McKinnon joined Trzcinski with three hits in the contest while driving in a pair of runs, while Correia and junior Meghan Jenkins (Dedham, Mass./Dedham) added a pair of hits each.

In the circle, senior Bethany Stone (Wells, Maine/Wells) picked up her second victory of the season, holding Mass-Maritime scoreless over the final three innings. Stone scattered five hits throughout the contest, yielding one earned run and striking out four.

On the Bucs side, Maynard collected two hits in the nightcap setback, while McLaughlin also connected for her second double of the day. Freshmen Meghan Thibeault (Scituate, Mass.) and Alex Burgess-Chrost (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) rounded out the Mass-Maritime offense with one single apiece.

Fitchburg State (9-21, 3-7 MASCAC) returns to action on Tuesday as it travels to Worcester State at 5 p.m. Mass-Maritime (2-20, 0-10 MASCAC) will travel to Bridgewater State on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
