Falcons topped 13-3 by Roger Williams; fall 11-2 vs. Amherst

FORT MYERS, Fla. (March 19, 2010) – The Fitchburg State softball team rounded out its Fort Myers, Florida trip this afternoon, falling to Rogers Williams College, 13-2 and Amherst College, 11-2.

In game one, Roger Williams collected eight consecutive runs over the fourth and fifth innings to jump out to a 13-3 lead and post an early, five inning victory.

Fitchburg State junior Nicole Monroe (Townsend, Mass./North Middlesex) led the Falcons offensively, hitting 1-for-2 with a triple and one RBI, while senior Leigh Trzcinski (Worcester, Mass./South) and freshman Steph Keller (Front Royal, Va./Warren County) added a 1-for-3 day with one single apiece.

In the circle, senior Bethany Stone (Wells, ME/Wells) took the loss for Fitchburg State, hurling 3.2 innings in the process. Stone allowed seven runs on seven hits, while walking two. Sophomore Alli Cousins (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) tossed 1.1 innings of relief for the Falcons, yielding six runs on five hits, two walks and one strikeout.

In game two, Fitchburg State continued to struggle at the plate, mustering only two runs on two hits in a 10-2 setback to Amherst College.

Amherst exploded for 11 hits in the second game but did not take the lead until the fifth inning. The Jeffs got one run in the fourth inning to make it a 2-1 game in favor of the Falcons, but an eight-run fifth broke the game wide open. Amherst would add another run in the sixth inning to end the game via the eight-run mercy rule.

Trzcinski paced the Falcons again, finishing 1-for-3 with a triple and one RBI, while sophomore Ashley McKinnon (Raynham, Mass./Bridgewater-Raynham) added one base-knock. Monroe earned the start for the Falcons, going 4.2 innings with nine runs allowed six hits and six walks, while Stone wrapped up the contest with 1.1 innings of relief (2R, 2H 1 BB).

In addition to going 2-for-4 in the second game, freshman Christina Anderson (Port St. Lucie, FL) earned the win by allowing two runs on two hits and two walks, also striking out ten Falcons. Rookie Reilly Horan (Darien, Conn./Darien) went 3-for-3 with a triple, while senior tri-captain Emily Neill (Kentfield, CA) and junior Jill Masi (Stamford, CT) each had a three-run triple for the Jeffs.
