Falcons fall short vs. Wheaton, 10-7; blanked 2-0 by Lasell

FORT MYERS, Fla. (March 16, 2010) – The Fitchburg State softball team competed this afternoon in  Fort Myers, Florida, battling Wheaton College and Lasell College in an afternoon double-header.

Fitchburg State exploded for a season-high seven runs and ten hits in game one today, but the Falcons fell to Wheaton College, 10-7 in non-conference action.

Freshman Jill Moses (Dedham, Mass./Dedham) had a successful day for Fitchburg State, hitting 3-for-4 with a single, double, triple and five RBI, while junior Nicole Monroe (Townsend, Mass./North Middlesex) connected for her first homerun of the season. Freshman Steph Keller (Front Royal, Va./Warren County) was also solid, finishing 2-for-4 with two singles, while sophomore Ashley McKinnon (Raynham, Mass./Bridgewater-Raynham) rounded out the Falcons attack with a double and one RBI.

Wheaton came all the way from behind and into the lead with eight runs on four hits, four walks and two errors in the sixth frame, over taking a 7-2 Fitchburg State lead. Freshman Renee Laflam (Concord, NH/Concord) plated the first run before another came home on a miscue, and sophomore Amanda Poplaski’s (N. Reading, Mass./N. Reading) two-run single made it 7-6. Later in the inning, classmate Nicole DeRosa (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich Academy) launched a tie-breaking three-run home run, giving the Lyons a three run lead.

Senior Bethany Stone (Wells, ME/Wells) took the loss for Fitchburg State, yielding four hits and three runs - all unearned - with two walks in 1.2 frames of relief. The Lyons spoiled a solid start from sophomore Alli Cousins (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) who tossed the game’s first five innings, allowing only five runs on five hits and five strikeouts.

In game two, Fitchburg State continued to swing a hot bat, totaling six hits in the contest, but the Falcons fell to Lasell College, 2-0. Sophomore pitcher Kristen Mommola (North Reading, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) earned the victory for Lasell, tossing a complete game shutout with only six hits allowed.

Nicole Monroe was solid again on the offensive side of the ball, hitting 1-for-3 with a double, while Ashley McKinnon also finished 1-for-3 with a single and stolen base.

On the mound, Monroe was also dominant, tossing a complete game while limiting Lasell to only three hits in the contest. Monroe tallied one of her best starts of the season, allowing on two runs, while striking out three.
