Fitchburg State sweeps Fisher, 13-2/8-0

Falcons take game one, 13-2; earn 8-0 win in game two

FITCHBURG, Mass. (April 4, 2012) –The Fitchburg State softball team collected a pair of wins in non-conference action this afternoon, winning game one 13-2 and game two 8-0 at Coolidge Park. 

 Fitchburg State 13, Fisher 2 (5 Game 1)

In the opener, Fitchburg State collected 13 hits and senior pitcher Allison Cousins (Leominster, Mass./ Leominster) collected six strikeouts en route to a 13-2 victory. Sophomore Shannon Fitzgerald (Blackstone, Mass./ Blackstone Regional) went 3-3 with three singles and two RBI and Alycia Mcgrail (N. Brookfield, Mass./ N. Brookfield) went 2-4 with a triple and three runs scored to lead Fitchburg past the Falcons of Fisher College.

Fitchburg State got on the board early in the first inning when McGrail scored on a sac fly off the bat of Ashley Forgues (Fitchburg, Mass./ Fitchburg). Rookie Victoria Brinkley (Durham, Conn./ Guilford) and Fitzgerald would connect for a pair of singles, putting Fitchburg State up by three after the first.

A six-run second inning included Megan Breault (Pamler, Mass./ Palmer) reaching on and error, and coming around to score on a Mcgrail RBI single, with Forgues also tallying an RBI single. Brinkley followed with a single to left, and Emily Pomer (Groveland, Mass./ Whittier Tech) would bring her across home plate with a double to center field. Fitzgerald would finish out the inning with an RBI single up the left side.

For Fisher, sophomore Demi Bourous (West Islip, NY./ West Islip HS) doubled to right field in the fourth to bring home Porsha Grayson (Merced, CA./ Merced CC). Kaleigh Gilbert (Lawrence, Mass./ Lawrence) followed by a single to left field, before Shannon May (Exeter, NH./ Dirigo HS) brought her home on an RBI single up the left side.

Cousins collected the win on the mound for Fitchburg State, tallying six strikeouts, while giving up two runs on five hits. Gilbert suffered the loss for Fisher giving up 13 runs on 13 hits while also totaling two strikeouts.

Fitchburg State 8, Fisher 0 (Game 2)

In the second half of a double header, Fitchburg State connected for a three run first inning, tallying eight hits throughout the game to lead them to an 8-0 win in five innings. 

 In the bottom of the first, Shannon Fitzgerald gave Fitchburg State a 2-0 lead on a single to center field after a Brinkley walk and Pomer reaching on a passed ball. Fitzgerald would come around to score and put the Falcons up 3-0 on an RBI single from Katelyn Fitzgerald (Fitchburg, Mass./ Saint Bernards).

After a two-run second inning, Fitchburg State would tack on three more with a triple from K. Fitzgerald who would come around to score on an Allison Page (Wakefield, Mass. Wakefield) single to left field. Amanda Whitelaw (Flemington, NJ./ Hunterdon Central) would reach on a fielder's choice, scoring on a McGrail single to center. Forgues would tally an RBI to end the inning and put the Falcons up 8-0.

May had the only hit for the Falcons of Fisher College on a single to center field in the second inning.

Earning the win for Fitchburg State was freshman Brittany Whiting (Sharon, Mass./ Sharon). Whiting pitched a five inning one-hitter, while fanning fives. Senior Brittany Calderon (Rockland, Mass./ Rockland) collected the loss for Fisher giving up eight runs on eight hits, while allowing two walks.

The Fitchburg State softball team (5-15, 0-2 MASCAC) will be back in action this Friday at it faces MCLA in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. Fisher College (0-25, 0-4 AMC) will travel to Briarcliff tomorrow at 3 p.m.
