Fitchburg State Defeats Albion, Falls to Waynesburg

Falcons blank Albion, 10-0; suffer 7-1 setback to Waynesburg in game two

KISSIMMEE, Fla. (March 14, 2013) – The Fitchburg State softball team registered a 1-1 spilt on day four of its Florida trip, defeating Albion College, 10-0 in game one before falling to Waynesburg College, 7-1 in the nightcap.

Fitchburg State 10, Albion 0 (Game 1)

In the opening game of the afternoon, the Falcons erupted for ten runs on ten hits as Fitchburg State defeated Albion College, 10-0 in a five inning mercy rule victory.

At the plate, junior Katelyn Fitzgerald (Fitchburg, Mass./Saint Bernards) provided the big spark for the Falcons, collected two singles and four RBI, while classmate Ashley Forgues (Fitchburg, Mass./Fitchburg) aided the offense with a two run single to go along with one run scored, two walks and a stolen base.

Junior Marissa Binnall (Fitchburg, Mass./Fitchburg) and Emily Pomer (Groveland, Mass./Whittier Regional) were also solid for Fitchburg State, collecting two hits apiece, while sophomore Nicole Romain (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) posted the lone hit for the Britons, a triple to left field in the fourth inning.

Fitchburg State took the lead in the bottom of the first inning as Forgues led off the game with a walk, stole second before moving to third on a wild pitch. Freshman Marissa Gemma (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) drew a walk and continued toward second base, allowing Forgues to score on the throw down to second base for the 1-0 margin.

The Falcons doubled their lead (2-0) in the following inning as Fitzgerald drove home sophomore outfielder Colleen Flaherty (Stoughton, Mass./Stoughton) with a base knock to second base.

The Green and Gold plated five more runs in the third frame, keyed by a two run single off the bat of Forgues and an RBI single from Pomer. Fitchburg State capped its scoring in the fifth inning, taking advantage of an Albion miscue before Fitzgerald struck for a two run single to center for the 10-0 lead.

In the circle, junior Kerry Alcott (Groton, Mass./Groton-Dunstable) delivered an outstanding performance for the Falcons, giving up just one hit, while striking out six in the complete game victory.

Waynesburg 7, Fitchburg State 1 (Game 2)

In game two, Waynesburg College defeated Fitchburg State by the score of 7-1. The Yellow Jackets used a four run third to register their fifth victory of the season.

Fitchburg State was led offensively by Binnall, who collected a pair of hits, while sophomore Amanda Whitelaw (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) and juniors Allison Page (Wakefield, Mass./Wakefield) and Fitzgerald posted one hit each.

On the hill, sophomore Brittany Whiting (Sharon, Mass./Sharon) took the loss, yielding six hits with two strikeouts in 3.2 nnings of work, while Alcott gave up the other three Waynesburg hits (2 K's) in 3.1 innings of relief. Junior Carrie Maier (Greensburg, Penn./Greensburg-Salem) earned the win for the Yellow Jackets, allowing one run on five hits, while striking out five and walking just one.

Fitchburg State (2-6, 0-0 MASCAC) will be back in action tomorrow as it takes on Waynesburg College at 3 p.m. and Lake Forest College at 5 p.m.
