Fitchburg State Sweeps Past Nichols, 7-3/14-1

Falcons post 7-3 victory in game one; round out sweep with 14-1 win in nightcap

DUDLEY, Mass. (April 25, 2013) – The Fitchburg State softball team closed out its 2013 non-conference play this afternoon, posting a pair of victories, 7-3 and 14-1 over Nichols College.

Sophomore Amanda Whitelaw (Flemington, N.J.) went 4-for-5 with two RBI in game one for the Falcons (16-20) while freshman Tori Cyrus (Everett, Mass.) drove in two runs as well. In game two, Cyrus and sophomore Colleen Flaherty (Stoughton, Mass.) each recorded three RBI as Fitchburg State pounded out 16 hits in game one and 10 in game two.

The Falcons scored three in the first and two in the second to build a 5-0 lead in the opener, which was more than enough run support for sophomore starter Brittany Whiting (Sharon, Mass.), who fanned 10 in seven innings for the win.

In game two, Fitchburg State struck for three in the first, four in the second, one in the third and six in the fourth to lead 14-0. Cyrus laced a two-run triple to open the scoring in the first, Flaherty singled in a pair in the second, and five different student-athletes had an RBI in the fourth.

Junior Kerry Alcott (Groton, Mass.) scattered four hits and struck out six in five innings of work to earn her ninth win of the season in game two. Four different Nichols student-athletes combined to allow 26 hits and 21 runs (15 earned) with eight walks and four strikeouts.

Junior Emalee Watkins (Malden, Mass.) registered two hits and two RBI in game one – highlighted by a two-run triple in the seventh – and had one of four Bison hits in the nightcap. Sophomore Rachel Dalrymple (Belvidere, N.J.) also had a pair of hits in game one while freshman Jordan D'Aurio (Northford, Conn.) had an RBI single in the fifth inning of game two.

Fitchburg State (16-20, 6-6 MASCAC) will visit Salem State University on Saturday at 12 p.m.
