Fitchburg State Edges Salem State, 3-2/2-1

Falcons post 3-2 victory in game one; nip Vikings 2-1 in the nightcap

SALEM, Mass. (April 27, 2013) – The Fitchburg State softball team traveled to Salem State University this afternoon and posted a MASCAC sweep with a 3-2 victory in game on and a 2-1 triumph in game two.

With the victories, Fitchburg State improves to 18-20 on the season and 8-6 in the MASCAC. The Falcons earned the fourth seed in the MASCAC tournament and will host the Vikings, who earned the fifth seed, on Thursday at 4 p.m.

In game one, Fitchburg jumped out to an early 2-0 lead behind singles from Tori Cyrus (Everett, MA) and Colleen Flaherty (Stoughton, MA).  Salem was able to cut into the lead in the fourth inning as freshman Rebecca Krigman drew a walk to start the inning and outfielder Michelle Flower (Reading, MA) hit an RBI single to trail 2-1 after four innings. 

Fitchburg State added an insurance run in the fifth inning on back to back singles from Marissa Binnall (Fitchburg, MA) and Cyrus.  Junior Allison Page (Wakefield, MA) hit a sacrifice fly to score the Binnall. 

In the bottom of the seventh Flower led off the inning with a single, a double for Bergeron and a sacrifice by Garchinsky accounted for the final score of 3-2. 

Sophomore Brittany Whiting (Sharon, MA) pitched a complete game giving up nine hits and striking out four for her eighth win of the season.  Bryan gave up six hits and struck out five in the loss.  She now stands at 12-6 on the season. 

In game two Fitchburg jumped out to an early lead, scoring two runs in the inning.  Ashley Forgues (Fitchburg, MA) led off the inning with a walk. Cyrus then hit a single and stole second before Whitelaw followed with a two run single.

Salem got a run back in the bottom of the frame as Bryan led off with a single, Bergeron drew a walk and Jenn Toussaint (Reading, MA) reached on an error.  Cipriani grounded out, scoring Bryan for a 2-1 game after the first inning.

Junior Kerry Alcott (Groton, MA) started on the mound for the Falcons and pitched a complete game, allowing six hits and striking out 8.  Her record on the season is 10-10.  Bergeron was on the mound for the Vikings and pitched a complete game, allowing 5 hits and striking out 5.  Her record now stands at 4-2.
