Fitchburg State Drops A Pair On Day One

Falcons drop game one, 12-0 to Monmouth; Fall 13-5 to Juniata in game two

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Fitchburg State softball team opened its 2015 season this morning, dropping a 12-0 decision to Monmouth College in game one before falling 13-5 to Juniata College in the nightcap on day one of its Florida spring trip.

Monmouth 12, Fitchburg State 0 (Game 1)

In game one, Monmouth College posted 12 runs on nine hits  en-route to the 12-0 victory as both teams opened their 2015 slates this morning at the National Training Center (NTR) in Clermont, Florida.

Junior Johanna Schultz led the Fighting Scots, going 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and a pair of RBI, while sophomore Kirstyn Ozga went 1-for-2 at the plate with a triple, one RBI and a run scored.

The Falcons were paced offensively by sophomore Katie Gildea, who finished 1-for-2 with a triple, while senior Amanda Whitelaw, and sophomores Jessalynne Brown and Gia Ferreira added one hits each for the Green and Gold.

Senior Brittany Whiting suffered the loss for Fitchburg State, yielding 12 runs (five earned) on  seven hits allowed and six K's over two and two third innings pitched, while senior Alyssa Edler earned the win for the Fighting Scots,  allowing just four hits, two walks and two strikeouts in the complete effort.

Juniata 13, Fitchburg State 5 (Game 2)

In the nightcap, Juniata scored 13 runs on 14 hits as the Eagles registered a 13-5 victory over Fitchburg State University in the second game of the morning for the Falcons.

Newcomer Emily Comtois led Fitchburg State's game two offensive charge, hitting a perfect 2-for-2 at the dish, including a double, one RBI and a run scored, while junior Brianna Uga added one hit, two runs batted in and run scored for the Falcons. Gildea and senior Marissa Binnall added to the offensive mix, combining for four hits, two runs scored and an RBI.

For Juniata, senior Katie Schroder finished 3-for-4 with a double, triple, three runs scored and two RBI, while junior Holly Bettinger collected three hits, including a double, two RBI and a pair of runs scored.

In the circle, sophomore Galen Kerr yielded five runs on seven hits with two K's in three innings of work for the Falcons, while freshman Chrisi Lerchen picked up for Juniata, allowing three earned runs on six hits and one strikeout.

Fitchburg State (0-2, 0-0 MASCAC) will be back in action tomorrow as it battles Gordon College at 9: a.m. and Marywood University at 1 p.m.
