Fitchburg State Registers Sweep On Day Two

Falcons shutdown Gordon, 5-0 in game one; Edge Marywood, 2-1 in game two to complete sweep

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Fitchburg State softball team collected pair of victories on the second day of their Florida spring trip. The Falcons posted a 5-0 shutout victory over Gordon College in the first game of the day before completing the sweep with a 2-1 win against Marywood University in game two.

Fitchburg State 5, Gordon 0 (Game 1)

In game one, Fitchburg State collected five runs on four hits en-route to the 5-0 shutout victory as sophomore hurler Terri Ferrazzani held the Fighting Scots of Gordon College to just four hits in the contest.

Fitchburg State's offense was led by junior Marissa Gemma, who went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and two runs scored, while sophomores Katie Gildea and Jessalynne Brown added a hit and one RBI each.

Senior Rachel Ryder led the offensive charge for the Fighting Scots with a double and one RBI, while classmate Kara Pepper and juniors Marissa Meenan and Kiersten Bieren added one hit each for Gordon.

In the circle, Ferrazzani spun a gem for the Falcons, giving up just four hits with a career best 11 strikeouts and a pair of walks in the complete game victory, while newcomer Emily Kline took the loss for Gordon, yielding five runs (3 earned) on four hits and one punch out.

Fitchburg State 2, Marywood 1 (9 Inn) (Game 2)

In the nightcap, with the score knotted at 1-1 in the bottom of the ninth inning, Fitchburg State took advantage of a throwing miscue, following a sacrifice bunt attempt by freshman Emily Comtois that plated Gildea, resulting in the 2-1 final to complete the sweep on day two of the their Florida spring trip.

Gemma continued the hot hitting for Fitchburg State, going 2-for-4 with a run scored and one walk, while Gildea added to the offensive mix, finishing 1-for-3 with a pair of walks and one run scored for the Green and Gold.

For the Pacers, sophomore Brooke Labs led the way, going 2-for-4 at the dish with a double and one RBI, while freshman Mackie Goodwin went 1-for-2, including a double and a sacrifice bunt for Marywood in the setback.

On the mound, sophomore Galen Kerr went the distance for Fitchburg State, allowing just one earned run on seven hits and 12 K's, while senior Emily Perruso took the loss for the Pacers, giving up one unearned run on one hit in two innings of relief.

Fitchburg State (2-2, 0-0 MASCAC) will be back in action tomorrow as it battles Emerson College at 1 p.m. and Thiel College at 3 p.m.
