Softball Earns Spilt On Third Day

Falcons clip Emerson, 3-2 in opening game; Drop 5-2 decision to Thiel In game two

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Fitchburg State softball team collected pair of victories on the second day of their Florida spring trip. The Falcons posted a 5-0 shutout victory over Gordon College in the first game of the day before completing the sweep with a 2-1 win against Marywood University in game two.

Fitchburg State 3, Emerson 2 (8 Inn) (Game 1)

In game one, Fitchburg State plated the game-winning run in the top of the eighth inning on a perfectly execute squeeze bunt from senior Marissa Binnall that plated sophomore Galen Kerr as the Falcons defeated Emerson College, 3-2 in eight innings.

The Falcons received an outstanding pitching performance from senior captain Brittany Whiting, who went the distance, giving up just two runs (1 earned) on three hits with eight K's, while junior Samantha Corey was just as impressive in the circle, giving up three unearned runs on only four hits and striking out three for Emerson.

Binnall led Fitchburg State's offense with one hit, an RBI and one stolen base, while sophomore Kelsea LeBlanc added to mix with a single and one run batted in. Sophomore Jessalynne Brown and senior Amanda Whitelaw chipped in as well with one hit each for the Falcons.

For the Lions, newcomer Lyndi McIntrye went 1-for-2 with a pair of runs scored, while classmates Christina Guessferd and Alexandria Martinez combined for Emerson's other two hits on the afternoon.

Thiel 5, Fitchburg State 2 (Game 2)

In the nightcap, Fitchburg State posted two runs on nine hits but the Tomcats of Thiel College scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to break a 2-2 stalemate as the Falcons dropped a 5-2 decision to Thiel in game two.

The Tomcats offense was paced by sophomore A.J. Corradi's 3-for-4 effort with an RBI and one run scored, while newcomer Caitlyn Carney collected a single and two RBI. Freshman Alana Callahan added to the offensive mix as well with a trio of hits and one run scored.

For Fitchburg State, Brown led the way, going 2-for-4 with a pair of singles and one run scored, LeBlanc finished 2-for-3 on the afternoon. Junior Marissa Gemma was also solid for the Falcons, registering two hits and a run batted in.

In the circle, sophomore Allison Williams earned the win for Thiel, allowing two earned runs on nine hits with one K and two walks, while Kerr took the loss of the Green and Gold, giving up five runs (4 earned) on nine hits and three strikeouts

Fitchburg State (3-3, 0-0 MASCAC) will be back in action on Thursday as it takes on Northwestern (Minn.) at 9 a.m. and Roger Williams at 11 a.m.
