Fitchburg State Sweeps On Final Day Of Florida Trip

Falcons post 4-1 win over NEC in game one; defeat Coast Guard, 4-2 in second game

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Fitchburg State University softball team collected a pair of victories to close out its 2015 Florida spring trip this afternoon. The Falcons defeated New England College, 4-1 in the opening game before posting a 4-2 win over the United States Coast Guard Academy to complete the sweep at the National Training Center Athletic Complex.

Fitchburg State 4, New England College 1 (Game 1)

In the opening game, Fitchburg State scored four runs on 11 hits en-route to a 4-1 win over the Pilgrims of New England College on the fifth and final day of its 2015 Florida spring trip.

Freshman Emily Comtois led the Falcons offense, going 3-for-4 with a trio of singles, while sophomore Galen Kerr posted a pair of singles and one run scored. Sophomore Katie Gildea was also solid for the Green and Gold, adding one hit, a stolen base and two RBI.

For New England College, junior Brittney Distante went 1-for-2 at the plate, including a double, and one RBI, while senior Alyssa Krause, junior Rebecca Allen and sophomore Gina Drappi added one hit each for the Pilgrims.

In the circle, Kerr, went the distance for Fitchburg State, allowing one earned run on five hits and ten strikeouts to earn the win, while sophomore Debra Mazzeo took the loss for New England College, giving up four unearned runs on 11 hits and two K's.

Fitchburg State 4, Coast Guard 2 (Game 2)

In the nightcap, Fitchburg State posted four runs on seven hits, en-route to a 4-2 win over the United States Coast Guard Academy to conclude its 2015 Florida spring trip with a record of 5-4.

The Green and Gold got another solid pitching performance from senior Brittany Whiting, who yielded just four hits with four K's in 5 and two thirds inning of work before giving way to sophomore Terri Ferrazzani, who went the final one and third innings to pick up her first collegiate save.

Offensively, sophomore Jessalynne Brown led the way for the Falcons, hitting 2-for-3 with a double and two runs batted in, while junior Brianna Uga aided the offense with a double and a pair of RBI. Senior captain Marissa Binnall finished a perfect 2-for-2 with one run scored for Fitchburg State.

For the Bears, junior Morgan Kingston went 1-for-4 with a double and two RBI, while seniors Kelsey Gray and Erin Lisko and junior Hannah Gray notched one hit apiece for the Coast Guard Academy.

Fitchburg State (5-4, 0-0 MASCAC) will be back in action on Tuesday as it travels to WPI to take on the Engineers for a double header, starting at 3 p.m.
