Falcons And Lancers Spilt MASCAC Tilt

Whiting and Comtois lead Falcons to MASCAC spilt with Worcester State

FITCHBURG, Mass. – The Fitchburg State softball team was in action this afternoon, splitting the season series with Worcester State University in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action at Donna Lee Withington Memorial Field. The Lancers took game one, 4-0 before the Falcons rebounded with a 3-0 game to victory.

Worcester State 4, Fitchburg State 0 (Game 1) 

In game one, Worcester State scored four runs on eight hits to secure its 13th win on the season.

Worcester State took the lead in the top of the second innings as junior Hayley Terry doubled down the right field line and scored on a single up the middle from classmate Sara Pelletier following a single by junior Meghan Rich for the 1-0 margin.

The Lancers increased its advantage in the following frame when sophomore Courtney Salisbury singled through the left side, moved to second on a walk from senior Katie Storro and crossed the plate a base knock off the bat of Terry before Rich and senior Taylor Hanley drove in runs on a sacrifice bunt and single for the 4-0 lead.

Fitchburg State threatened in the bottom half of the third as freshman Emily Comtois singled to left and moved to third on a double by sophomore Galen Kerr  to put runners on second and third with two outs but Rich induced an inning ending pop up to escape the inning unscathed,  resulting in the 4-0 final.

The Lancers offense was led Terry, who went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double, two runs scored and one RBI, while Rich finished a perfect 2-for-2 with a double and one run batted in. For Fitchburg State, Kerr hit 1-for-3, including a double, while seniors Marissa Binnall and Katelyn Fitzgerald added one hit each for the Falcons.

In the circle, Rich earned the win, scattering five hits with three K's in the complete game effort for Worcester State, while Kerr took the loss, giving up four runs on eight hits and two strikeouts.

Fitchburg State 3, Worcester State 0 (Game 2)

In the nightcap, Fitchburg State rebounded, posting three runs on nine hits to secure the season spilt with Worcester State.

In the circle, senior Brittany Whiting twirled a gem for the Falcons, allowing just three hits with six punch outs, while junior Marissa Avanzato took the loss for Worcester State, yielding three runs on nine hits (1 K).

Comtois paced the Falcons game two offense with a pair of hits, including a double and two runs batted in, while Kerr went 2-for-3 with a double, one run scored and one RBI. Worcester State was led offensively by Storro with a double, while Salisbury and Terry collected the Rams other two hits.

Following a scoreless five innings of play, Fitchburg State broke a 0-0 stalemate in the bottom of the sixth stanza. Binnall opened the frame with a single to short, moved to second on a base hit by sophomore Jessalynne Brown and scored on a double to left off the bat of Kerr before Comtois drove in Brown and Kerr with a double to left for the 3-0 lead.

The Lancers nearly broke its scoring silence in the top of the seventh when Rich drew a two-out walk and advanced to second on a fielding miscue to put runner on first and second, but Whiting closed out the contest for the Green and Gold with a fly out to secure the 3-0 game two win for Fitchburg State.

Fitchburg State (10-7, 5-3 MASCAC) returns to action on Thursday as it hosts the Mariners of Mitchell College for a double header starting at 3 p.m. Worcester State (13-5, 5-1  MASCAC) will travel to Rhode Island College tomorrow for a twin billing, starting at 4 p.m.
