Falcons Earn Sweep On Day Four

Fitchburg State collects 5-2 win over Norwich in game one; Edges Lasell 5-3 in the second game

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Fitchburg State University softball team registered a sweep on the fourth day of its 2016 Florida Spring Trip. The Falcons notched a 5-2 win over the Cadets of Norwich University in game one before completing the sweep with a 5-3 victory against Lasell College in the nightcap.

Fitchburg State 5, Norwich 2 (Game 1)

In the opening contest of the day, Fitchburg State posted five runs on 11 hits, en-route to registering a 5-2 victory over Norwich University

The Falcons opened the scoring in the top of the second when sophomore Emily Comtois singled before pinch runner Damari Grossi moved to second on a single by newcomer Hayley McCarthy and scored on a double off the bat of senior Brianna Uga for the 1-0 advantage.

Fitchburg State upped its lead (4-0) in the top of the fourth as Uga reached on fielding miscue, advanced to second on walk from freshman Michelle LeBlanc, moved to third on base hit by senior Marissa Gemma and crossed the plate on Jessalynne Brown single, while sophomore Katie Gildea plated a pair of runs with single to score Gemma and M. LeBlanc.

Norwich broke up the shutout in the bottom of the sixth when freshman Mallori Cesario, classmate Jessica Hindman and Jones all singled to load the bases for the Cadets before sophomore Olivia Bussiere delivered with a clutch two run single to make the score 4-2.

The Green and Gold capped the scoring in the top of the seventh as Brown tripled and following a pair of fly outs, scored on base hit off the bat of newcomer Samantha Holey, resulting in the 5-2 final.

Fitchburg State was led offensively by Brown, who went 3-for-4 at the plate with a triple, one run scored and an RBI, while Gildea added a pair of hits as well as two RBI. For Norwich, Bussiere registered one hit and drove in two, while Cesario, Jones and Hindman collected one hit each.

On the mound, junior Galen Kerr picked up her first win on the season, allowing two runs on six hits with nine K's in the complete game effort for the Falcons, while freshman Emily Oliver suffered the loss, yielding five runs (2 earned) on 11 hits with three strikeouts.

Fitchburg State 5, Lasell 3 (Game 2)

In the nightcap, Fitchburg State completed the sweep on the fourth day of their 2016 Florida Spring Trip after registering a 5-3 win over the Lasers of Lasell College at the Foundation Academy at the National Training Center in Clermont, Florida.

For the Falcons, Gemma led the way, hitting 3-for-4 with two runs scored, one RBI and a stolen base, while Comtois added to the mix with a trio of singles and two runs batted in. Senior Emily DeAngelis paced the Lasers offense, going 1-for-3 at the plate with a triple and two RBI, while junior Erin Smith and sophomore Ashley Garchell notched one hit and one run scored each.

In the circle, newcomer Kaylee Sylvestre went the distance for the Falcons, giving up three runs on five hits and six strikeouts en-route to her third win on the season, while senior Eileen Bergin took the loss of Lasell, allowing five runs (4 earned) on 14 hits.

Fitchburg State took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Gemma singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a double off the bat of Brown before Comtois singled in Brown after a ground out.

The Green and Gold upped its margin in the following inning when senior Tori Cyrus singled, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and come around to score on a run scoring single from Gemma for the 3-0 lead.

Lasell answered with a pair of runs in the top of the third as Gatchell singled, advanced to second on single by Smith and crossed the plate on a two-out triple by DeAngelis that also plated Smith to cut the lead to 3-2.

The Falcons responded with a run in the bottom half of the third when Brown reached on a two base fielding miscue before being lifted for Grossi, who proceeded to score Fitchburg State's fourth run of the contest on a Comtois single.

The Lasers added a single run in the top of the fourth on a throwing miscue before Fitchburg State capped the scoring with a run the bottom of the sixth as Gemma singled, moved to second and third on a sacrifice bunt and an error and scored on Brown RBI single, resulting in the 5-3 final.

Fitchburg State (4-4, 0-0 MASCAC) concludes its 2016 Florida Spring Trip tomorrow morning as it takes on Babson at 8:30 a.m. and North Park at 11 a.m.
