Fitchburg State Closes Out Florida Trip With Sweep On Day Five

Falcons double up Babson, 8-4 in game one; Edge North Park, 1-0 in nightcap

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Fitchburg State University softball team concluded its 2016 Florida Spring Trip this morning after collecting an 8-4 win over the Beavers of Babson College in the first contest before completing the sweep with a 1-0 shut victory over the Vikings of North Park University at the National Training Center.

Fitchburg State 8, Babson 4 (Game 1)

In the first contest on the day, Fitchburg State erupted for eight runs on eight hits en-route to posting an 8-4 win over the Beavers of Babson College at Hancock Park.

Offensively for Fitchburg State, senior Tori Cyrus led the way, going 2-for-3 with a homerun, one run scored and three RBI, while sophomore Emily Comtois added to the mix with a pair of hits, including a homerun, a double, three RBI and a pair of runs scored.

Freshman Ashley Tango paced the Beavers offense, hitting 1-for-2 with homerun, one run scored and three runs batted in, while junior Leslie Moore finished 2-for-3 at the dish, including a homerun, one run scored and an RBI.

In the circle, newcomer Kaylee Sylvestre collected the win, yielding four runs on five hits with one K in five innings of work for the Falcons, while sophomore Ali Reilly took the loss for Babson, allowing five runs (3 earned) on four hits and striking out two in 1.1 innings pitched.

Fitchburg State took an early 5-0 lead in the top of the second innings as sophomore Katie Gildea doubled to open the frame and scored on an RBI double off the bat of Comtois. After Sylvestre reached on fielding error, Cyrus belted a three run home run into left center before junior Jessalynne Brown doubled home freshman Maddie Medina.

Babson cut into the deficit in the bottom of the fourth when Moore blasted her first home run of the season to make the score 5-1. The Falcons answered back with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth as Gildea singled with one out and Comtois launched her first collegiate home run into left field for the 7-1 advantage.

The Beavers battled back however in the bottom of the sixth with Moore and junior Meaghan Merullo starting things off with back-to-back singles before Tango connected on a three run shot to right to cut the Falcons lead to 7-4.

The Green and Gold added an insurance run in the top of the seventh as sophomore Jill Schultze reached on a fielding miscue, stole second, moved to third on a walk by Comtois and scored on muffed throw, resulting in the 8-4 final.

Fitchburg State 1, North Park 0 (Game 2)

In the nightcap, Fitchburg State downed the Vikings of North Park University, 1-0 to close out its 2016 Florida Spring Trip with a sweep on the fifth and final day at the National Training Center.

Fitchburg State scored what proved to be the lone run of the contest in the bottom of the first when senior Marissa Gemma walked, moved to second on single by Brown, advanced to third on walk from Gildea and scored on a passed ball for the 1-0 lead.

North Park threatened in the top of the second as freshman Simone Carroll singled, advanced to second on a fielding miscue to put runners on first and second before both runners moved into scoring position on a passed ball but Falcon hurler Galen Kerr induced a pop up to second to get out of frame unscathed.

The Vikings attempted to knot the score one last time in their final at bat when sophomore Ashley Campos singled with two outs and moved to second on walk from freshman Amara Leith before Kerr ended the contest with a strikeout, resulting in the 1-0 final.

The Green and Gold were paced by Gemma, who finished 1-for-3 at the plate with a run scored, while Brown added two hits for the Falcons. For North Park, Campos went 2-for-3, while freshman Kendall Podschweit added to the mix with one hit, including a double.

On the bump, Kerr went the distance for the Falcons, allowing six hits and striking out five en-route to her second win on the season, while senior Kathy Ortinau took the loss for North Park, giving up one unearned run on five hits and three K's in the complete game effort.

Fitchburg State (6-4, 0-0 MASCAC) returns to action on Tuesday as it hosts the Engineers of WPI for a double header starting at 3 p.m. in the Falcons 2016 home opener at Coolidge Park.
