Fitchburg State Splits With Regis, 1-0/6-3

Falcons fall 1-0 in opener; Register 6-3 win in the night cap

WESTON, Mass. – The Fitchburg State softball team was in action this evening, registering a spilt with the Pride of Regis College in a non-conference double header at Regis Stadium. The Falcons suffered a tough 1-0 setback in the opener before rebounding with a 6-3 game two victory to salvage the split.

Regis 1, Fitchburg State 0 (Game 1)

Regis broke a 0-0 deadlock in the bottom of the third inning when senior Kirbie Garvey reached on a fielder's choice, moved to second on a single from junior Allison Caloggero and scored fielding error for the 1-0 margin.

Fitchburg State threatened in the top of the fifth as freshman Hayley McCarthy singled to left, advanced to second a wild pitch before classmate Maddie Medina drew a two-out walk but senior hurler Katie Cuozzo induced an inning ending pop up to get out of the jam, resulting in the 1-0 final.

For Fitchburg State, McCarthy, Medina, sophomores Jessalynne Brown and Katie Gildea as well as senior Tori Cyrus registered one hit each, while Cuozzo, freshman Brianna Napoleone and Caloggero posted one hit each for the Pride.

In the circle, junior Galen Kerr took the loss, allowing one unearned run on three hits and six strikeouts in six innings of work, while Cuozzo earned the win for Regis, giving up just five hits with six K's in the complete game effort.

Fitchburg State 6, Regis 3 (Game 2)

In the night cap, Fitchburg State got a stellar outing from freshman Kaylee Sylvestre, who yielded three runs on 11 hits and a career best13 K's in seven innings of work, en-route to registering her fifth win on the season.

Cyrus led the way for the Falcons, going 3-for-4 at the dish with a double and one RBI, while McCarthy and sophomore Emily Comtois combined for four hits, one double, two runs scored and a pair of runs batted in. For Regis, Napoleone finished 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Garvey added a pair of hits, including a double and two runs scored.

In the circle, freshman Kaylee Sylvestre yielded three runs on 11 hits and 13 K's in the complete game effort for the Fitchburg State, while counterpart Jeszy McGuire allowed five runs (4 earned) on six hits in just 1.1 innings of work for the Pride.

Fitchburg State took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first when senior Marissa Gemma reached on throwing miscue, moved to second on sacrifice bunt, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI groundout off the bat of Gildea before Comtois doubled home McCarthy, who walked earlier.

Regis cut the deficit in half in the bottom half of the first when Napoleone walked, advanced to second on single from Garvey and crossed the plate on a base hit off the bat of senior Alyssa McKinnon to make the score 2-1.

The Green and Gold upped its advantage in the top of the second as Medina singled to center, stole second, moved to third on a base hit from Gemma and scored when freshman Melissa DiPhilippo was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, while McCarthy and Gildea added RBI's with a single and walk respectively.

With the score 6-2, the Pride rallied in the bottom of the sixth when freshman Alysa DiFruscia singled, moved to second and third on a sacrifice bunt and single by newcomer Kelsey Grimard and crossed the plate as Napoleone singled to right to cut the lead to 6-3.

Fitchburg State (7-7, 0-0 MASCAC) will be back in action on Saturday as it visits the Rams of Framingham State University for double header starting at 1 p.m. Regis (5-5, 1-1 NECC) will travel to Wheelock College for a twin billing for a 12 p.m. start.
