Fitchburg State Registers Pair of 8-0 Wins Over Mass. Maritime

Gemma and Cyrus led Falcons to MASCAC sweep over Buccaneers

FITCHBURG, Mass. The Fitchburg State University softball team picked up a pair of 8-0 shutout wins over the visiting Buccaneers of Massachusetts Maritime Academy in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action this afternoon at the Donna-Lee Withington Memorial softball field.

Fitchburg State 8, Mass. Maritime 0 (Game 1)

Fitchburg State took the lead in the bottom of the second when senior Marissa Gemma was hit by a pitch, stole second, moved to third on a fly out before junior Jessalynne Brown laced a bases-loaded double down the left field line to score Gemma and sophomore Emily Comtois, who had walked earlier in the inning for the 2-0 margin.

The Green and Gold upped its lead in the bottom of the third as senior Brianna Uga, junior Galen Kerr and newcomer Samantha Woodman all singled to load the bases, while Gemma freshman Maddie Medina and Cyrus drove in runs, resulting in the 8-0 game one final.

Cyrus led the way for the Falcons, going 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and one run scored, while Brown finished a perfect 2-for-2, including a double, one run scored a two runs batted in. For Massachusetts Maritime, sophomore Carli Thomas hit 2-for-3, while freshman Emily Goodwin added the Buccaneers other hit in the contest.

In the circle, Kerr picked up the win for Fitchburg State, allowing just three hits with six strikeouts in the four innings pitched, while Thomas took the loss for the Buccaneers, allowing seven earned runs on ten hits in four innings of work.

Fitchburg State 8, Mass. Maritime 0 (Game 2)

In the night cap, Cyrus led the charge for the Falcons, finishing 2-for-2 with a triple, two runs scored and a pair of RBI, while freshman Kaylee Sylvestre batted a perfect 3-for-3, including a double.

On the bump, Sylvestre and newcomer Mara Boboruzian combined to allow just one hit with nine K's in five innings of work, while Thomas got the call of the Buccaneers again, giving up four earned runs on 11 hits and one strikeout in four innings pitched.

Fitchburg State opened the scoring in the bottom of the first as Medina walked, stole second, moved to third on throwing miscue and scored on a base knock from Cyrus, while Cyrus and Brown crossed the plate following a single and throwing miscue later in the inning for the 3-0 advantage.

The Falcons extended their margin (7-0) in the following frame when Woodman walked, advanced to second on a ground and scored on a double by Gemma before Cyrus tripled into the right center gap to plate Medina and Gemma, en-route to an 8-0 game two final.

Fitchburg State (10-8, 3-1 MASCAC) will be back in action on Wednesday as it travels to Curry College to take on the Colonels for a double header starting at 3 p.m. Mass. Maritime (1-9, 0-2 MASCAC) will host the Lancers of Worcester State University tomorrow for a twin billing slated for a 12:00 pm start.
