Fitchburg State Swept By Worcester State

Falcons drop 5-0 decision in game one; suffer 6-3 setback in the night cap

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University softball team dropped a pair of games this evening to the Lancers of Worcester State University in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action at Rockwood Park.

Worcester State 5, Fitchburg State 0 (Game 1)

In the opening contest, Worcester State took the lead in the bottom of the first as senior Hayley Terry doubled and scored on a double by sophomore Sydney Despres before junior Dakota Smith-Porter singled in Despres for the 2-0 margin.

Fitchburg State threatened in the top of the second when junior Jessalynne Brown and sophomore Katie Gildea connected on back-to-back singles to open the frame, but Lancer pitcher Meghan Rich worked out of the jam, inducing a pair of ground outs and a strike out to preserve the 2-0 lead.

The hosts doubled its advantage (4-0) in the bottom half of the fourth as Despres walked, stole second and moved to third on a ground out, while junior Rachel Couto knocked in Despres with a double before Couto scored on base hit off the bat of classmate Courtney Salisbury.

Worcester State secure the game one victory, tacking on an insurance run in the fifth when Simth-Porter walked, stole second and scored on a double from senior Taylor Daniels, resulting in the 5-0 final.

Gildea led the way for the Falcons, going 2-for-3, while senior Tori Cyrus and Brown added one hit each for the Green and Gold. For Worcester State, Despres finished 2-for-3 with a double, one run scored and an RBI, while Daniels hit 2-for-3, including a double, one RBI and a run scored.

In the circle, junior Galen Kerr took the loss for Fitchburg State, allowing five runs on eight hits and two K's in six innings of work, while Rich collected the win for the Lancers, pitching a complete game, four hitter with five strikeouts.

Worcester State 6, Fitchburg State 3 (Game 2)

In game two, Cyrus paced the Falcons game offense, hitting 3-for-4 with a run scored and one RBI, while Brown finished 2-for-4 with a double. Sophomore Emily Comtois was also solid for Fitchburg State with a 1-3 effort at the dish, including a double and two RBI.

For the Lancers, Despres batted 2-for-3 with a home run, one run scored and a pair of RBI, while Salisbury added a 2-for-3 performance, including a double, a triple, two runs scored and an RBI.

On the bump, newcomer Kaylee Sylvestre suffer the setback for Fitchburg State, yielding six runs (4 earned) on seven hits with three strikeouts in six innings of work, while junior Kayla Humprey picked up the win for the Lancers, allowing three runs on five hits and one K in four innings of work.

Worcester State opened the scoring in the bottom of the first frame when Salisbury doubled to left and scored on a two-run home run to center off the bat of Despres before senior Sara Pelletier doubled to plate Daniels for the 3-0 lead.

The Green and Gold knotted the score (3-3) in the top of the third as newcomer Maddie Medina reached on a fielding miscue, advanced to second on walk by junior Kelsea LeBlanc and scored on a base hit off the bat of Cyrus, while Comtois singled in K. LeBlanc and Cyrus.

The Lancers regained the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth when Couto walked and scored on triple by Salisbury, while Salisbury crossed the plate on a fielding miscue and Smith Porter singled to right to drive in Terry, resulting in the 6-3 game two final.

Fitchburg State (15-17, 5-7 MASCAC) will be back in action on Thursday as it hosts the Falcons of Fisher College for a double header, starting at 3 p.m. Worcester State (20-17-1, 10-2 MASCAC) will host MCLA on Saturday for a twin billing starting at 12 p.m.
