Falcons Split On Day Two In Myrtle Beach

Collect 17-5 triumph in opener; Fall 11-1 in the night cap 

Myrtle Beach, S.C. – The Fitchburg State softball team earned a split on the second day of their annual spring trip to Myrtle Beach as the Falcons defeated the Falcons of Albertus Magnus, 17-5 in the first game of the day before dropping an 11-1 decision to the Warriors of Lycoming in the nightcap.

How It Happened

In game one, Fitchburg State raced out to an early 8-0 lead in the top of the first as senior McKenzie Lambert (Wilbraham, Mass.) laced a two-run single to right center, while sophomore Audrey Johnson (Fitchburg, Mass.) followed with a two-run shot over the left center field fence.

Albertus Magnus would cut the lead to 9-5 in the bottom of the second frame, but the Falcons extended their margin (15-5) in the top of the fourth with Johnson, sophomore Lundyn Forcier (Woonsocket, R.I.) and freshman Sarah Cahill (Mansfield, Mass.) collecting RBI's in the stanza.

Fitchburg State secured the victory in the top of the fifth when Johnson and newcomer Molly Grass (Rockland, Mass.) connected on back-to-back run scoring doubles, resulting in the 17-5, game one final.

In game two, Lycoming grabbed a 3-0 edge in the top of the first when freshman Morgan Wetzel (Mill Hall, Penn.) singled home a run, while sophomore Morgan Christine (Reigelsville, Penn.) added a two-run base hit.

The Warriors doubled their margin (6-0) in the top of the third with Christine singling to right to plate a run and sophomore Angie King (Cooperstown, Penn.) followed with a two-run single through the right side.

Fitchburg State cut the deficit to 7-1 in the bottom half of the fifth as freshman Abbie Roderick (Woonsocket, R.I.) tripled to right center and came around to score on an RBI single by graduate student Kayla Baker (Shrewsbury, Mass.).

Lycoming secured the victory, scoring five runs in the top of the seventh, resulting in the 11-1, game two final.
