Falcons Fall to Penn College & Montclair State

 

Myrtle Beach, SC.  – The Fitchburg State softball team dropped games to Penn College (5-3, 8 innings) and Montclair State (10-2, 5 innings) in day one action at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic in Myrtle Beach, Fla.

The Basics

How It Happened – Game 1

The Falcons opened the game with the first run of the season in the bottom of the first inning. Junior Dana Cisowski (Torrington, Conn.) led off with a single to centerfield and scored three batters last on a miscue from Penn College.

The Falcons doubled the lead in the third inning with an RBI triple from senior Molly Grass (Rockland, Mass.) scoring Julia Gauvin (Granby, Mass.). Penn tied the game with a 2-RBI triple from junior Margaret Mangene (Boalsburg, PA.) in the bottom of the frame.

In extra innings. Penn took their first lead (5-2) of the game with a sacrifice fly from Lexi Snyder (Hegins, Pa.) and a double from Ivvy Morder (Mechanicsburg, PA). The Falcons added a run in the bottom of the eighth resulting in the 6-2 final.

Senior Sarah Cahill (Mansfield, Mass.) went the distance in the circle for the Falcons, allowing 2 earned runs on five hits with nine strikeouts.

Inside the Numbers – Game 1

  • Grass was 1-for-4 with a triple and an RBI
  • Senior Madison Mantegani (Bellingham, Mass.) was 2-for-3 and a stolen base
  • For Penn, Mackenzie Weaver earned her second win of the season

How It Happened – Game 2

Montclair State raced out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Liz Mullen delivered the big hit with a double to left center plating two.

Trailing 6-0, the Falcons tipped the scoreboard with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning. Cisowski doubled to left center scoring junior Allison Pogorek (Millbury, Mass.) who had walked to open the frame. Grass followed with a double to left center scoring Cisowski to make it a 6-2 ball game.

Montclair padded the advantage in the bottom of the frame with three runs and added an insurance run in the fourth.

Inside the Numbers – Game 2

  • Cisowski was 1-for-2 with a double, RBI, and a walk
  • Grass was 2-for-3 with a double, and an RBI
  • Sophomore Mackenzie Leveille (Brooklyn, Conn.) allowed 6 runs on 5 hits in 1.2 innings in the loss for the Falcons
  • Junior Mary Kate Moreau (Berkley, Mass.) pitched 2.1 innings in relief allowing 2 earned runs on five hits
