Falcons Split Non-Conference Twin Bill With Colonels

Bigeau and Cahill pace Green and Gold

Milton, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University softball team split a pair of games with the Colonels of Curry College this afternoon in non-conference action from D. Forbes Will Field as the Falcons took the opener 6-3 in eight innings before dropping the night cap, 4-0.

How It Happened

Game One

Curry College opened the scoring in the bottom of the second innings when senior Madison Schwartz (Bridgewater, Mass.) singled down the left field line to plate junior Taylor McDermott (Durham, Conn.) for the 1-0 lead.

The Colonels upped the advantage to 3-0 in bottom of the fourth with junior Madelyn White (Franklin, Mass.) doubled to left field, scoring sophomore Jillian Rogers (East Freetown, Mass.) before McDermott singled in freshman Alli Mansfield (Georgetown, Mass.).

Fitchburg State answered in the top of the sixth as sophomore Kiara Bigeau (Clinton, Mass.) laced a two-run double to right center to bring home classmate Julia Gauvin (Granby, Mass.) and senior Molly Grass (Rockland, Mass.) to trim the deficit to 3-2.

The Falcons knotted the contest at 3-3 in the following frame when junior Dana Cisowski (Torrington, Conn.) doubled to right field, moved to third on single off the bat of Gavin and crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Bigeau.

The Green and Gold secured the victory in the top of the eighth with senior Sarah Cahill (Mansfield, Mass.) singled to right center, scoring junior Allison Pogorek (Millbury, Mass.), while Cisowski followed with an RBI single right center that scored senior Bryanna O'Connor (Hudson, N.H.), resulting in the 6-3 final.

  • Bigeau led the Falcons, going 2-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI

Game Two

Curry took a 2-0 edge in the bottom of the first as Rogers doubled to left center to score senior Emily Bussiere (Stow, Mass.) before McDermott reached on a throwing miscue that brought in Rogers.

The Colonels doubled the lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the fourth as a pair of runs crossed the plate on a throwing miscue. Fitchburg State threatened in the top of the fifth when sophomore Isabella Sousa (Charlton, Mass.), classmate Ella Marshall (Gloucester, Mass.) and freshman Madison Lashua (Gardner, Mass.) singled to load the bases, but Colonels hurler Hailey King (Cranston, R.I.) worked out of the jam unscathed, resulting in the 4-0 final.
