Falcons Split Doubleheader with Mass. Maritime

Buzzards Bay, Mass. – The Fitchburg State softball team split a doubleheader with the Buccaneers of Massachusetts Maritime Academy in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action on Saturday afternoon. The Falcon notched a 15-11 win in game one while the Bucs posted a 5-0 shutout in the nightcap.

How It Happened – Game 1

Mass. Maritime raced out to an 11-2 lead after four innings before the Falcons put together one of the best come-from-behind victories.

In the top of the fifth inning and the bases juiced with Falcons junior Julia Gauvin (Granby, Mass.) singled scoring two runs. Sophomore Mackenzie Leveille (Brooklyn, Conn.) followed with a single to right center to cut the deficit to 11-5.

The Falcons made it a one-run game (11-10) in the sixth inning, Senior Molly Grass (Rockland, Mass.) doubled to right center scoring two, and Gauvin followed with a triple scoring Dana Cisowski (Torrington, Conn.) and Grass. Isabella Sousa (Charlton, Mass.) drew a two-out bases loaded walk scoring the fifth run of the inning.

In the top of the seventh Leveille delivered a one-out single to left field scoring the game-winning run. Ella Marshall (Gloucester, Mass.) and Sousa added RBIs scoring a pair of insurance runs,

Inside the Numbers – Game 1

  • Leveille picked up her third win of the season allowing 4 runs (2 earned) over 4.1 innings in relief with 2 Ks and a walk
  • Jennamarie Klemp took the loss for MMA tossing a complete game allowing 15 runs on 20 hits with 3 Ks.
  • Gauvin was 3-for-5 with a triple and 4 RBIs
  • Grass was 2-for-5 with a double and 2 RBIs

How It Happened – Game 2

In the bottom of the second inning, the Bucs took a 3-0 lead. Carleen Harring (Billerica, Mass.) doubled to left center and scored on Grace Biondo's (Manvel, TX) double. Biondo scored on a defensive miscue from the Falcons.

MMA added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the third to up the lead to 5-0.

Inside the Numbers – Game 2

  • Madison Mantegani (Bellingham, Mass.) and Shaelyn Burns (North Attleboro, Mass.) had the hits for the Falcons
  • Mary Kate Moreau (Berkley, Mass.) suffered the setback for the Green and Gold, allowing three earned runs on 6 hits and one strikeout
  • Erin Donlan (Durham, CT) earned the victory for the Buccaneers
