Payette named to MASCAC All-Conference first team; Torres and Rogers collect second team accolades

The Fitchburg State men's and women's basketball teams combined to name three student-athletes, senior Stephanie Payette (Townsend, Mass./North Middlesex), sophomore Kelley Rogers (Lowell, Mass./Lowell) and senior Brian Torres (North Dighton, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth), to the 2008-2009 MASCAC All-Conference teams this week.FITCHBURG, Mass. (February 26, 2009) -

Payette headlines the list of Falcon All-Conference winners, earning her fourth career nomination and her second MASCAC All-Conference first-team honor. This season, Payette ranks among league leaders in points per game (4th), rebounds (6th), field goal percentage (6th), free-throw percentage (2nd), and blocks (4th). She has posted a team-best 13.4 ppg, while bringing in a team-high 7.0 rebounds per contest.

Payette reached two exclusive milestones throughout her four-year career, as she became the program's all-time leading rebounder and the 8th lady Falcon to reach the 1,000 point plateau. The senior captain has seen action 106 career games, while totaling 1220 points and 828 rebounds. 


 
BRIAN TORRES

Rogers picks up her first All-Conference second team honor after being named the 2007-2008 MASCAC Rookie of the Year last season. Rogers has had a solid sophomore campaign, cracking the MASCAC Top 20 in points per game (16th), rebounds (20th), three-point percentage (6th), and three-pointers made (9th). This season, Rogers ranks second on the team in scoring with 8.8 ppg, while posting 4.4 rebounds per match.

Torres collects his third career MASCAC All-Conference honor, while earning his second first-team nomination. The three-year captain has been the backbone of the Falcons offense this season, posting a team-high 17.5 ppg along with 4.4 rebounds and 22 steals. He ranked among the MASCA top five players in points per game (4th), free-throw percentage (4th), and three-pointers made (3rd), while ranking 17th overall in rebounds.

Torres has had a stellar career as a Falcon, appearing in 99 career games. He currently ranks third on Fitchburg State's all-time scorers list with 1,583 career points, while totaling 471 rebounds.

The Fitchburg State women's basketball team (16-9, 10-2 MASCAC) will be in action on Friday as it battles Salem State College in the MASCAC Tournament semi-finals at 7:30 p.m. This match will take place on the campus of Westfield State College. The men concluded their season on Tuesday with an 8-16 record overall and a 2-10 mark in the MASCAC.
