Rogers and Payette combine for 31 points in MASCAC setback

FITCHBURG, Mass. (January 27, 2009) - Sophomore Kelley Rogers (Lowell, Mass./Lowell) netted a team-high 18 points as Fitchburg State fell to Westfield State, 74-62 in MASCAC action this evening.

setback to Westfield State.

The duo of Rogers and senior Stephanie Payette (Townsend, Mass./North Middlesex) led Fitchburg State for the second straight game, combining for 31 of the Falcons 62 points. Rogers guided the Falcons on 6-of-10 shooting, including 4-of-7 from three point range, while Payette connected for 13 points and eight boards. Junior Kari Averill (Barre, Vt./Spaulding) added seven points and two steals to round out the Falcons top three.

Senior Andrea Wasuk (Lenox, Mass./Lenox) led Westfield State in the front court, posting a team-best 18 points and nine rebounds, while junior Sarah Boudreau (Tewksbury, Mass./Tewksbury) connected for 15 points and five boards. Senior Katie Sylvain (Hadley, Mass./Hopkins Academy) was also solid for the Owls, registering 14 points and four caroms, while sophomore Cassy Jouannet (Conway, Mass./Frontier Regional) chipped in with 12 points.

Westfield State hit 14-of-27 shots (.519 pct) in the first half to grab a 36-32 advantage at intermission. Wasuk led the Owl attack with eight points and three boards in the frame, while Payette connected for 11 points (5-of-7 shooting) and seven rebounds.

In the second half, Westfield State took advantage of a sidelined Payette, posting a 12-5 run over the final four minutes to collect its 15th victory of the season. Fitchburg State opened the period with a 7-0 run, taking a 39-36 lead, but after an injury sidelined Payette at the 14:34 mark, Westfield State responded with a 10-3 run to grab a ten point advantage (64-54). Wasuk led the Owls with ten points in the half, while Rogers added ten for the Falcons.

Fitchburg State (11-7, 4-2 MASCAC) will be in action on Saturday as it travels to Framingham State College at 1 p.m. Westfield State (15-3, 6-0 MASCAC) will host Bridgewater State on Saturday at 1 p.m.
