Four Falcons net double-figures in key MASCAC shootout

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. (February 6, 2010) - Junior Kelley Rogers (Lowell, Mass./Lowell) collected 19 points to lead four Fitchburg State players in double-figures but the Falcons fell to Bridgewater State College, 83-72 in MASCAC action this afternoon.

with 19 points and 11 rebounds.

Rogers led the Fitchburg State shooting brigade as the junior guard collected her second double-double of the season with a 19 point, 11 rebound effort. Classmate Melissa Proffitt (Hubbardston, Mass./Quabbin Regional) was also strong with 12 points and eight rebounds, while captain Molly Maloney (Taunton, Mass./Taunton) added 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field. Senior Kari Averill (Barre, Vt./Spaulding) rounded out the double-digit efforts with ten points, four rebounds and four steals.

Fitchburg State came out ready to go, collecting a seven point lead just 3:22 into the contest, but Bridgewater State rallied back, using a 12-0 run to post a five point margin just five minutes later. Sophomore Shelly DePina (New Bedford, Mass./New Bedford) sparked the Bears rally with a steal and bucket at the 15:49 mark, while back-to-back threes by Elisha Homich (Ludlow, Mass./Ludlow) and Brittney Chappron (Braintree, Mass./Braintree) capped the Bears scoring run.

The Falcons continued to answer the Bears scoring surge as Fitchburg State regained its lead with 5:54 remaining and took a four point advantage into the break. Rogers paced the Falcons scoring with 11 points, while Averill drained a pair of treys, including a bucket with 0:32 remaining in the half.

In the second period, the Bridgewater State offense got hot, opening the period with a 15-0 run and shooting 51.5% from the floor. The Bears pieced together a 48 point, second-half effort to secure their eight conference victory of the season as Chappron caught fire, posting 15 points in the half on 3-of-5 shooting from three point range. Junior Corey Cuddihy (Scituate, Mass./Scituate) was also strong in the half with nine points, while DePina notched five points and four steals.   

Fitchburg State (9-12, 3-5 MASCAC) will be back in action on Tuesday as it travels to Worcester State at 6 p.m. Bridgewater State (12-8, 8-1 MASCAC) will host Amherst College on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
