Bridgewater State Shoots Past Fitchburg State, 100-75

Goreham collects first double-double of the season with ten point, ten rebound effort

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. (January 15, 2011) – The Bridgewater State women's basketball team registered 62 second-half points to cruise to a 100-75 victory over Fitchburg State University in MASCAC action this afternoon.

The Bears had seven players in double figures with freshman Jenna Williamson (Ludlow, Mass./Ludlow) leading the way, totaling  a game-high 18 points. Williamson shot 6-of-11 from the floor, including 4-of-8 from long range to pace Bridgewater State, while classmate Megan Boutilette (Charlton, Mass./Shepherd Hill) and senior Brittney Chappron (Braintree, Mass./Braintree) added 15 points apiece. Senior Cory Cuddihy (Scituate, Mass./Scituate) was also strong with 12 points, six assists and four steals, while junior Shelly DePina (New Bedford, Mass./New Bedford) rounded out the offense with a ten point, six rebound performance.

For the Falcons, senior Melissa Proffitt (Hubbardston, Mass./Quabbin Regional)  paved the way, collecting a team-high 18 points to go with four rebounds and two assists, while freshman Amy Fahey (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington) played strong off the bench with 17 points and six boards. Junior Rebecca Goreham (Quincy, Mass./Quincy North) wrapped up the Falcons top scorers, posting her first double-double of the season with ten points and ten rebounds.

Holding just an eight point lead at the half, 38-30, Bridgewater State busted loose for 62 points in the second half to secure its second MASCAC victory of the season. The Bears opened the half strong, collecting an 18 point lead at the 15:43 mark with a 21-11 run to open the half. Chappron sparked the Bears with a trio of threes in the rally, while Cuddihy added a pair of lay-ups.

Bridgewater State maintained its lead for the remainder of the contest, pulling away in the final minutes for a 27 point advantage. Chappron and Williamson led the Bears second half surge with 11 points apiece, combining for six three pointers, while Cuddihy added nine points on 3-of-6 shooting from the field. Proffitt paced the Falcons with 13 of her 18 points in the second half.

Fitchburg State (7-6, 1-1 MASCAC) will be in action again on Tuesday as it hosts Worcester State University at 5:3 0 p.m. Bridgewater State (11-3, 2-1 MASCAC) will host Worcester State on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
