Fitchburg State Falls At MCLA, 75-65

Moses and Fahey combined for 21 points in Falcons MASCAC loss

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. (January 22, 2011) – Senior Hilary Perks (Saugerties, N.Y./Saugerties) scored a career high 20 points as the MCLA women’s basketball team defeated Fitchburg State University, 75-65 in MASCAC action this afternoon.

With the score standing at 55-52 in favor of the hosts, MCLA went on a 12-2 run to push the lead to 13 with 5:44 remaining. Fitchburg State did not go quietly however, chipping away at the Trailblazer lead. Freshman Amy Fahey (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington) brought the Falcons within five on a pair of successful free-throws, but MCLA ended the Falcon comeback with solid free-throw shooting down the stretch.

The first half opened up as a seesaw affair as Fitchburg State took command using a 7-0 run for a 17-9 lead at the 10:42 mark. MCLA responded with a run of its own, outscoring the Falcons 13-2 over the next four minutes for a 22-19 advantage. The Trailblazers opened a five point lead on a few occasions before Fitchburg State battled back to knot the game at 32-32 at the end of the first half.

Perks finished her day with 20 points and five assists, while junior Jen Wehner (Cooperstown, N.Y./Cooperstown) had a double-double, collecting 17 points and 12 rebounds.  Joining the duo in double figures were sophomore Lucy Tremblay (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia HS) with 14 points and junior Courtney Terzi (Little Falls, N.Y./Little Falls) who added 12 points off the bench.

Fitchburg State was led by senior Melissa Proffitt (Hubbardston, Mass./Quabbin Regional) who tallied a team-high 12 points while battling foul trouble throughout the game.  Sophomore Jill Moses (Dedham, Mass./Dedham) added 11 points, while Fahey finished the contest with ten.

Fitchburg State (8-7, 2-2 MASCAC) will be in action again on Tuesday as it host Westfield State at 5:30 p.m. MCLA (11-5, 3-1 MASCAC) will travel to Bridgewater State on Wednesday for a match starting at 5:30 p.m.
