Western Connecticut Shoots Down Fitchburg State, 87-50

Proffitt nets team-best 17 points in Falcons final contest of the 2010 year

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (December 30, 2010) – The Fitchburg State women's basketball team continued its 2010 campaign this morning, falling to Western Connecticut State University, 87-50 in the Land of Magic Classic hosted by Embry-Riddle University.

Senior Melissa Proffitt (Hubbardston, Mass./Quabbin Regional ) paced the Fitchburg State offense, scoring a team-high 17 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the floor. Sophomore Jill Moses (Dedham, Mass./Dedham) added eight points and four boards off the bench for the Falcons, while freshman Amy Fahey (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) pulled down a game-high ten caroms.

Western Connecticut sophomore Nicole Eanniello (Danbury, Conn./Danbury) registered a game-high 18 points to lead all scorers, while senior Karli Spera (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) added 16 points, seven steals, five assists and four boards. Classmate Melissa Teel (Hamden, Conn./Hamden) was also strong for the Colonials, controlling the glass with a team-best eight rebounds.  

Western Connecticut never trailed after the 13:06 mark of the first half as Eanniello's jumper gave her team an early 7-6 margin. The Colonials grabbed a 14 point advantage heading into the break (41-27)  led by Eanniello's nine point, first half performance.

Western Connecticut, ranked 25th in the latest USA Today/ESPN Division III Poll, shot nearly 50% in the second half and forced Fitchburg State into 33 turnovers for the contest. The Falcons were strong on the glass with 38 boards through the match, but were limited on the offensive end, hitting just 16 of their 46 attempts from the field.

Fitchburg State (6-4, 0-0 MASCAC) will be in action again on Tuesday as it hosts Salve Regina at 5:30 p.m. Western Connecticut (8-1, 2-0 LEC) will host CCNY on Monday starting at 6 p.m.
