FITCHBURG, Mass. (February 3, 2011) – Senior Megan Jacobs (Stoughton, Mass./Stoughton) and classmate Kim Duprey (Bernardston, Mass./Pioneer Valley) combined for 23 points as Fitchburg State rallied past Worcester State, 48-45 in MASCAC action this evening.

Jacobs led all Falcon scorers with 12 points, shooting 4-of-9 from the field and 2-of-3 from three point range, while Duprey finished with 11 points with 3-of-7 shooting from beyond the arc. Seniors Kelley Rogers (Lowell, Mass./Lowell) and Melissa Proffitt (Hubbardston, Mass./Quabbin Regional) were also strong, chipping in with eight points apiece.

For the Lancers, senior Alexis George (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name) paved the way offensively, totaling a game-high 13 points on 5-of-13 shooting from the field, while sophomore Megan O’Keefe (Warren, Mass./Quabog) also hit double-figures with ten points and four rebounds.

Facing an uphill battle with a 23-14 deficit at the break, Fitchburg State opened the second half strong, cutting the Worcester State lead to only five (32-27) following a series of three pointers from Duprey and Jacobs. The Falcons continued to inch closer over the next five minutes and evened the score at 37-37 as Jacobs connected with a trey and Rebecca Goreham (Quincy, Mass./North Quincy) finished a conventional three-point play at 7:23 mark.

Fitchburg State gained its momentum over the next four minutes, recording a six point advantage with 3:17 remaining in regulation, but Worcester State did not go quietly, pulling within two (47-47) with 1:02 on the clock.

After a made free-throw from Jacobs put the score at 48-45, Worcester State marched downed the court for the final shot attempt. The Lancers worked their offense setting up a three by Kara Rogers (Lowell, Mass./Lowell), but her attempt missed its mark and a rebound by Proffitt sealed the contest.

Despite shooting only 18.5% from the floor in the first half, Fitchburg responded with a 9-of-24 effort in the second stanza for its 34 point outburst. The Falcons held the Lancers to only seven field goals in the second half and used nine turnovers to register 11 points. Fitchburg State controlled the glass with a 52-45 advantage, while Worcester State notched a 28-21 margin in turnovers.

Fitchburg State (9-9, 3-4 MASCAC) will be in action again on Saturday as it hosts Bridgewater State University at 1 p.m. Worcester State (10-9, 4-3 MASCAC) will travel to Framingham State on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
