Bridgewater State Claws Past Fitchburg State, 83-53

Fahey collects seventh double-double of the season in Falcons MASCAC loss

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. (January 28, 2012) – Sophomore Amy Fahey (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington) registered yet another double-double on the 2011-12 season but the Fitchburg State women's basketball team fell to Bridgewater State, 83-53 in MASCAC action this afternoon.

Fahey was a bright spot on a tough afternoon for the Falcons offense, finishing with 21 points and 18 boards. Fahey shot 7-of-22 from the field and 7-of-8 from the charity stripe to post her seventh double-double of the year. Classmate Laura Cote (Ashby, Mass./Saint Bernards) was the only other Fitchburg State player in double-figures, finishing with 18 points, four boards, four assists and four steals.

Fitchburg State found itself in a hole right away as Bridgewater State strung together 21 consecutive points for an 18 point advantage just 8:23 into game. The Falcons bounced back and cut the Bears lead to only 11 (29-18) with 4:14 remaining in the first half, but Bridgewater State closed the period with another 9-0 surge to grab a 17 point margin at the break.

The Bears continued to dominate play in the second half getting up by as many as 35 points (74-39) before settling for the 83-53 triumph. Bridgewater State shot 45% (31-69) for the game including 8-for-18 (44%) from three-point range, while also receiving some solid play from its bench, who outscored Fitchburg State 28-3.

The Falcons struggled with their shooting throughout the game, knocking down just 24% (18-75) of their field goal attempts including just 1-for-15 from behind the arc. Sophomore forward Megan Boutilette (Charlton, Mass./Shepherd Hill) paced the hosts with eight points, 13 rebounds, five assists and five steals, while senior forward Monica-Sabina Bharoocha (North Smithfield, R.I./North Smithfield) added 13 points, five assists and three steals on the afternoon.

Fitchburg State (14-5, 2-5 MASCAC) will be back in action next Saturday as it hosts Bridgewater State at 1 p.m. Bridgewater State (12-6, 6-1 MASCAC) will travel to Framingham State on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
