Fitchburg State Downs Curry, 73-65

Fahey collects first double-double of the season with 20 point, ten rebound effort

MILTON, Mass. (November 19, 2011) – The Fitchburg State women's basketball team collected a 73-65 non-conference victory over Curry College in the first round of the 2011 Curry College Tip Off Tournament this evening.

After three lead changes, sophomore Amy Fahey (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington) sank a pair from the charity stripe with 8:13 remaining in the first half to give the Falcons a 12-11 lead that they would never surrender. Sophomore Meaghan Secino (Leominster, Mass./Saint Bernards) hit a three-pointer with two seconds left in the first period to give Fitchburg a 32-20 edge at intermission.

Another pair of Fahey free throws gave the Falcons their biggest lead of the game (57-42) with 7:49 remaining in regulation, but Curry responded with a 14-2 run over the next three minutes that was capped off with a layup by freshman Kylie Beltz (Pequot Lakes, Minn.) to cut the deficit to three (59-56). Fitchburg State then went on to score 14 of the game's final 23 points for the victory.

Fahey recorded a double-double with 20 points and ten rebounds, while Secino also contributed 20 points on the night. Sophomore Madison Marek (New Ipswich, N.H./Saint Bernards) scored 11 to round out the Falcons top three scorers and senior Rebecca Goreham (Quincy, Mass./North Quincy) pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds.

The Colonels were led by junior Hailey Rafferty (Worcester, Mass.) who totaled a game-high 24 points, while Beltz chipped in with 10 points.

Curry (0-2, 0-0 TCCC) plays UMass Dartmouth in the Curry Tip-Off Tournament consolation game at 1:00 p.m. tomorrow, while Fitchburg State (2-0, 0-0 MASCAC) faces Maine Maritime at 3 p.m.
