Fitchburg State Tops Maine Maritime, 80-68

Fahey and Goreham named to All-Tournament team

MILTON, Mass. (November 19, 2011) – The Fitchburg State women's basketball team extended its winning streak to three games this evening, defeating Maine Maritime Academy, 80-68 in non-conference action at the Curry College Tip-Off Invitational.

Fitchburg State built its biggest lead of the first half (24-11) after a layup by senior Rebecca Goreham (Quincy, Mass./North Quincy) with 9:31 left in the period, but Maine Maritime pulled within one (36-35), using a Kari Jones (Nobleboro, Maine) bucket from beyond the arc with 2:24 remaining before intermission. The Falcons went on to close out the first half with a 6-0 run that was capped off by a Goreham jump shot to take a 42-35 lead at the break.

Fitchburg State took its biggest lead of the game (52-37) in the second half as the Falcons gained their 15 point cushion following a Jackie Boffoli (Holden, Mass.) lay-up with 15:44 left in regulation. By the 7:50 mark, the Mariners cut the lead to seven (61-54) after senior Sam Goda (Eliot, Maine) hit a pair from the charity stripe, but Fitchburg State Maine Maritime to just seven more points over the remainder of the game to take home the 80-68 victory.

Sophomore Amy Fahey (Wilm) led Fitchburg State with a game-high 28 points, along with 13 rebounds, while Goreham also recorded a double-double with 18 points and a game-high 14 boards. Junior Kelsey Johnston (Shirley, Mass.) was also solid, chipping in with 13 points.

The Mariners were led by Goda with 19 points. Junior Casey Everest (Portland, Maine) added 16 points, while senior Maggie Smith (Bath, Maine) contributed 15. Goda, Everest while junior Alexis Bennett (Freedom, Maine) pulled down eight boards apiece.

Named to the All-Tournament Team were: Rebecca Goreham (Fitchburg State), Amy Fahey (Fitchburg State), Sam Goda (Maine Maritime), Maggie Smith (Maine Maritime), Kelsey Garrity (UMass Dartmouth) and Hailey Rafferty (Curry).

Fitchburg State (3-0, 0-0 MASCAC) will be back in action on Tuesday as it travels to UMass Boston at 5:30 p.m.
