Fitchburg State Tallies Another At Simmons, 68-48

Fahey nets 27 as Falcons open 2011-12 season with a perfect 6-0 mark

BOSTON, Mass. (December 1, 2011) – The Fitchburg State women's basketball team remained undefeated as it tallied a 68-48 non-conference victory over Simmons College at the Holmes Sports Center this evening.

For the third straight contest, sophomore Amy Fahey (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington) led all Falcon scorers, posting a game high 27 points to lead Fitchburg State to its sixth straight win of the season. Sophomore Meaghan Secino (Leominster, Mass./Saint Bernards) also hit double figures for Fitchburg State with 11 points and two rebounds, while senior Rebecca Goreham (Quincy, Mass./North Quincy) added nine points and ten caroms on the night.

The first half started quietly as both teams combined for only 20 points in the first ten minutes of play, but Fitchburg State broke loose after the midway point, taking a 36-18 advantage into the locker room. Fahey and Goreham combined for 18 points in the half, while Secino added six points with a pair of threes.

In the second stanza, Fitchburg State picked up its offensive effort, hitting 38% from the field for 32 second half points. The Sharks also increased their tempo, striking for 30 points in the half behind strong shooting from sophomore Hannah May (Hamden, Conn.). May finished strong for Simmons, going 4-of-9 from downtown and capping her evening with 13 points.  

Despite the strong shooting efforts from May, Fitchburg State continue to cruise to its sixth win of the year, as Fahey cashed in for 17 points, hitting 8-of-11 from the field. The Falcons maintained their double-digit lead for the entire second period, going up by as much as 24 late in the half.

Fitchburg State took advantage of 26 Shark turnovers on the night, transitioning down the court for a 28-2 margin in points off turnovers. The Falcons finished 18-of-22 from the charity stripe (81.3%) while hitting 23-of-72 from the field.

Fitchburg State (6-0, 0-0 MASCAC) will be in action again on Saturday at it travels to Emerson College at 12 p.m. Simmons (1-5, 0-0  GNAC) will host UMass Dartmouth next Wednesday at 7 p.m.
