Fahey becomes ninth Falcon to reach 1,000 point plateau

FITCHBURG, Mass. (January 3, 2013) – The Fitchburg State women's basketball team collected a pair of 40 point halves, rolling to an 85-55 victory over Anna Maria College in non-conference action this evening.

In the victory, junior Amy Fahey (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington) became the ninth player in Fitchburg State women's basketball history to reach the 1,000 point plateau, using a 22 point effort on the evening. Fahey, who has 216 points on the season, collected the honor in just two and half years of playing after posting 590 points in her sophomore campaign.

The third-year forward wasted no time in eclipsing her record book honor, scoring nine of the Falcons first 13 points of the opening frame. Fitchburg State jumped out to a commanding 15-4 lead just five minutes into the contest and continued to dominate, notching an 18 point advantage (46-28) at the break. Fahey led the Falcons first half scoring efforts with 13 points, while seniors Madeline Merchant (Gardner, Mass./Monty Tech) and Kelsey Johnston (Shirley, Mass./Saint Bernards) added eight points apiece.

In the second half, Fitchburg State continued its offensive pursuit, outscoring the AmCats 39-27 in the stanza. The Falcons shot 41.7% from the floor (15-of-36), while hitting 8-of-9 from the charity stripe. Fahey led Fitchburg State's second half momentum with nine points, while Merchant and Megan Wodzinski (Littleton, Mass./Littleton) added eight points and five points respectively.

Merchant finished the contest shooting 6-of-12 from the floor for 16 points and nine rebounds, while Johnston chipped in with ten points and seven caroms. Senior Katie Pryor (Whitinsville, Mass./Northbridge) led the AmCats with 14 points on 5-of-12 shooting from the floor, while Taylor Walker (Winchendon, Mass./Narragansett) collected 11 points and seven boards.

For the game, Fitchburg State shot 45.9% from the field, including 19-of-38 in the first half. The Falcons controlled the glass with a 43-39 margin, while scoring 33 points off 31 Anna Maria turnovers.

Fitchburg State (6-5, 0-0 MASCAC) will be back in action on Saturday as it hosts Bridgewater State at 1 p.m. Anna Maria (3-8, 0-0 GNAC) will visit Trinity College next Thursday night at 7 p.m.
