Fitchburg State Downed By Bridgewater State, 104-81

Four Falcons net double-figures in MASCAC setback

FITCHBURG, Mass. (January 26, 2013) – The Fitchburg State women's basketball team traveled to Bridgewater State University this afternoon and suffered a tough MASCAC setback to the Bears, 104-81.

Bridgewater State used a balanced attack as five Bears connected for double-digits. Senior Elisha Homich (Ludlow, Mass./Ludlow) and Jenna Williamson (Ludlow, Mass./Ludlow) paved the way with 19 points apiece, while Michaela Cosby (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) added 18.

Fitchburg State had four players in double figures as junior Laura Cote (Ashby, Mass./Saint Bernards) led the way with 20. Newcomers Andrea DeSousa (Taunton, Mass./Coyle Cassidy) and Megan Wodzinski (Littleton, Mass./Littleton) were also solid with 13 points and 12 points respectively, while Amy Fahey (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington) added ten points to the mix.

Both teams opened the first half trading baskets but Bridgewater State quickly broke open a 4-4 deadlock, snapping off a 13-2 run over the next two minutes to boast an 11 point margin it would not surrender. The Bears largest lead of the first half came directly at the end of the period as a lay-up by Watkins lifted Bridgewater State to a 49-37 advantage. Cote led the Falcons first half efforts with 12 points, while Homich notched 13 for the hosts.

In the second half, the Bears continued their momentum, opening a 23 point lead just 2:34 into the stanza. Bridgewater State led by as much as 30 in the half, shooting 16-of-31 from the field, including 5-of-9 from downtown. Fitchburg State also shot well, connecting on over 54.0% of their attempts, but 36 points off turnovers in the second period prove to be the difference maker for the Bears.

For the game, Fitchburg State shot over 54.0% for the game, including 8-of-18 from three point range, but 35 turnovers and a 42-37 deficit on the glass hampered the Falcons all game. Bridgewater State finished 45.8% from the field and totaled 24 steals in the contest.

Fitchburg State (9-10, 2-5 MASCAC) will be back in action on Saturday as it travels to Framingham State at 1 p.m.
