Fitchburg State Falls To Curry, 69-56

Falcons clipped by Colonels in championship round of Curry Tip-Off

MILTON, Mass. (November 17, 2012) – The Fitchburg State women's basketball team advanced to the 2012-13 Curry Tip-Off Championship game this afternoon but fell to the host Colonels, 69-56 in non-conference action.

In the championship game, Falcons' sophomore Kristen Enright (Westminster, Mass./Oakmont) converted on a layup with 9:03 remaining in the first frame and pulled Fitchburg State within three at 19-16, but the Colonels responded with a 15-7 run to close out the half and take a 34-23 edge at intermission. Sophomore Jeanette Fallon (Nashua, N.H.) sparked the run with a made free throw and also capped it off with a layup with 14 seconds on the clock.

In the second half, Curry took its largest lead of the contest at the 4:02 mark as sophomore Kylie Beltz (Pequot Lakes, Minn.) connected on a pair of free-throws for a 61-43 advantage. Beltz led the Colonels with a team-high 23 points on 8-of-12 shooting, including two from beyond the arc, while sophomore Samantha Corcoran (Hampton, N.H.) and Fallon added 16 and 14 points, respectively.  Corcoran recorded a double-double with a game-high 13 rebounds.

Fitchburg State was led offensively by junior Amy Fahey (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington) who notched a 27-point, ten-rebound double-double effort. Freshman Megan Wodzinski (Littleton, Mass./Littleton) was also solid, adding 16 points on the afternoon.

Fitchburg State (1-1, 0-0 MASCAC) will be back in action on Tuesday night as it hosts UMass Boston at 5:30 p.m.
