Fitchburg State Shines Over Elmira, 56-47

Falcons earn opening round victory in Key Largo Florida Classic

TAVERNIER, Fla. (December 30, 2012) – The Fitchburg State women's basketball team earned an opening round victory over Elmira College, 56-47 in first round action of the Key Largo Florida Classic this afternoon.

Junior Amy Fahey (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington) sparked the Falcons, connecting for a team-best 21 points on 9-of-18 shooting from the floor and a 3-of-6 effort from the free-throw line. The junior forward also added eight boards, four steals and two blocks on the afternoon.

Classmate Kristen Enright (Westminster, Mass./Oakmont) was also strong the Falcons front court, adding a double-double effort of 11 points and ten rebounds, while freshman Tory Cyrus (Everett, Mass./Everett) and junior Laura Cote (Ashby, Mass./Saint Bernards) notched five points apiece.

At the break, Elmira held a slim 26-20 advantage behind a 37.5% shooting effort (12-of-32), but Fitchburg State battled back throughout the second half, shooting nearly 50.0% for 36 points in the frame. The Falcons connected on 11-of-23 from the floor and 12-of-14 from the charity stripe to complete their comeback and clinch their fifth victory of the season.

Throughout the second stanza, Fitchburg State limited Elmira to only 21 points and less than 20.0% shooting from the floor (6-of-31). The Falcons issued 22 turnovers throughout the match and also held a 31-24 advantage on the defensive boards.

The Falcons started their comeback immediately in the second half, using a 14-4 run over the first six minutes of play. Fitchburg State increased its lead to seven with a three from Cote and lay-up from Madeline Merchant (Gardner, Mass./Gardner) before extending its lead to nine with a trey from Cyrus. The Falcons iced the game down the stretch, using a pair of free throws from Cote.

With the victory, Fitchburg State (5-4, 0-0 MASCAC) will be back in action tomorrow as it battles UMass Boston at 5 p.m. Elmira (4-6, 0-0 GNAC) will face Maine Maritime Academy at 2 p.m.
