Fitchburg State Nips Emerson, 61-59

Fahey registers double-double with 20 points and 12 caroms to lead Falcons

FITCHBURG, Mass. (December 8, 2012) – Sophomore Rebecca Fluet (Fitchburg, Mass./Fitchburg) knocked down a three pointer with 12.9 seconds remaining to lift Fitchburg State over Emerson College, 61-59 in non-conference women's basketball action.

Junior forward Amy Fahey (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington) led all scorers with her 20 point effort on 8-of-17 shooting from the field, while also pulling down a team-leading 12 boards. Freshman Tori Cyrus (Everett, Mass./Everett) also hit double figures with 11 points and four assists, while Fluet and sophomore Kristen Enright (Westminster, Mass./Oakmont) added nine points apiece.

Sophomore Kristin Brice (Indiana, Penn./Indiana Area Senior) led the Lions, notching a double-double of her own with a team-high 17 points and 11 caroms, while junior Elissa Chojnicki (Dover, N.H./St. Thomas Aquinas) and senior Shannon Norton (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North) chipped in with 14 and 12 points respectively.

In the first half of play, Emerson erased a ten point deficit with less than two minutes remaining the stanza, using a 7-0 run to close out the half down only three (30-27). Brice ignited the comeback with a pair of free throws at the 1:47 mark before Norton struck for a big trey. Brice completed the run with jumper with 30 second left on the clock to send the game into intermission

The contest was back and forth over the final 20 minutes of play, with neither team gaining more than a two basket advantage. With the score knotted at 57-57, Norton hit a pull away jumper with 38 seconds remaining but as time winded down Fluet received an outlet pass from Cyrus and knocked down the go ahead trey before Fahey sealed the victory for the Falcons, connecting on one of two free-throws for the 61-59 final.

For the game, Fitchburg State shot 34.7%, hitting 25-of-72 from the field, while also connecting on 6-of-19 shot attempts from behind the arc. Emerson shot 32.8% from the floor, while also hitting on 14-of-20 free-throws (70.0%).

Fitchburg State (3-4, 0-0 MASCAC) will be back in action on Tuesday night as it visits Mount Ida College at 6 p.m. Emerson (2-6, 0-0 GNAC) will visit Plymouth State University for a match starting at 6 p.m.
