Fitchburg State Posts Victory Over Johnson State, 89-57

Fahey sparks Falcons with 21 points in 2012-13 season opener

MILTON, Mass. (November 16, 2012) – The Fitchburg State women's basketball team opened its 2012-13 season in convincing fashion this evening, defeating Johnston State, 89-57 in opening round action of the Curry Tip-Off Tournament.

Junior Amy Fahey (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington) picked right up where she left off during the 2011-12 season, leading the Falcons with 21 points and six rebounds on 10-of-13 shooting from the field. Newcomer Taylah Pelote (E. Taunton, Mass./E. Taunton) was also solid, turning in an 11 point, 11 rebound double-double effort in her first game as a Falcon, while Kelsey Johnston (Shirley, Mass./Saint Bernards), Madeline Merchant (Gardner, Mass./Monty Tech) and Megan Wodzinski (Littleton, Mass./Littleton) all added double figures with 12 points, ten points and ten points respectively.

The Falcons used a strong first-half and broke out to a commanding 26 point lead at the break as they collected 54 points throughout the stanza. The Green and Gold shot 56.4% from the field in the opening frame, while hitting on 9-of-12 from the charity stripe.

In the second half, Fitchburg State continued its strong shooting, hitting on 3-of-11 from the long range and 16-of-41 from the field for a 35 point outburst. The Falcons finished the contest, connecting on 47.5% from the floor, while hitting 4-of-17 from beyond the arc, and 9-of-13 from the free-throw line for their first victory of the year.

Fitchburg State (1-0, 0-0 MASCAC) will be back in action tomorrow as it battles the winner of Southern Vermont and host Curry College at 3 p.m. Johnson State (1-0) will face the loser of game two in the consolation round at 1 p.m.
