Fitchburg State Rebounds Over Lasell, 66-55

Fahey notches double-double with 23 points and 14 boards in Falcons non-conference win

 

FITCHBURG, Mass. (December 4, 2012) – Junior Amy Fahey (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington) registered her second double-double of the season as the Fitchburg State women's basketball team rebounded with a 66-55 victory over Lasell College this evening.

            Fahey led all scorers with a game-high 23 points, shooting 8-of-17 from the floor with a game-best 14 rebounds and a 7-of-8 effort from the free-throw line. Classmate Laura Cote (Ashby, Mass./Saint Bernards) also hit double figures with 14 points, while senior Madeline Merchant (Garnder, Mass./Monty Tech) added five points and ten caroms.

            Sophomore Danielle Autencio (Montville, Conn./Montville) led the Lasers, posting a double-double effort of her own with a team-high 13 points and 14 rebounds, while freshman Molly Lauver (Cambridge, N.Y./Cambridge) chipped in with ten points and three boards.

            Fitchburg State erased a two point deficit at the end of one period of play (26-24) by rifling off 40 points in the second en route to its second victory of the season. Despite going down by nine early in the second frame (37-28), the Falcons erupted for a commanding 10-0 run to post a 38-37 lead at the 14:05 mark. Fahey led the charge with a pair of lay-ups, while a three by Andrea DeSousa (Taunton, Mass./Coyle Cassidy) brought Fitchburg State within two.

            The contest went back and forth for the final seven minutes of play with neither team gaining more than a two basket lead. A jumper and pair of free-throws by Cote pushed Fitchburg State's lead to six (60-54) while clutch free-throw shooting down the stretch by Fahey sealed the contest for the Falcons,

            For the game, Fitchburg State 32.0%, hitting 21-of-65 from the floor, while also connecting on 72.0% from the charity stripe. The Falcons dominated the boards, 55-37, including a 24-10 advantage on the offensive glass.

            Fitchburg State (2-4, 0-0 MASCAC) will be back in action on Saturday as it hosts Emerson College at 1 p.m. Lasell (3-4, 0-0 GNAC) will visit Westfield State on Thursday at 7 p.m.
