Fitchburg State Rolls At Mount Ida, 73-59

Falcons improve to .500 behind Fahey's game-high 33 points

NEWTON, Mass. (December 11, 2012) – The Fitchburg State women's basketball team improved to 4-4 on the season as the Falcons posted a 73-59 non-conference victory over Mount Ida College this evening.

A 33 point effort from junior Amy Fahey (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington) led Fitchburg State to its fourth victory of the season. Fahey led all scorers, hitting 13-of-18 from the floor and 7-of-9 from the charity stripe. Classmate Laura Cote (Ashby, Mass./Saint Bernards) was also strong, with 17 points, connecting on 3-of-6 from long range, while freshman Andrea DeSousa (Taunton, Mass./Coyle Cassidy) chipped in with nine points and six boards.

Senior Evonbee Acosta (Hartford, Conn./Buckeley) led the Mustangs offensive attack, totaling a double-double with a team-high 27 points and 12 rebounds, while Jenn Rafuse (Brockton, Mass./Brockton) and Abbey Fedigan (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) added 11 points and ten points apiece.

After one period of play, Mount Ida held a five point advantage (35-30), using a 14 point outburst from Acosta throughout the stanza, but Fitchburg State battled over the second half, shooting 50.0% from the field en route to a 43 point explosion. Fahey led the Falcons second half comeback, connecting for 23 of her 33 points, while Cote shot a perfect 4-for-4 from the field for 12 points in the period.

For the contest, Fitchburg State shot 41.5% from the field, including 6-of-23 from the downtown, while the Falcons also controlled the boards 45-39 and the turnover game, 20-19. The Mustangs were limited to just 35% shooting for the game and just three baskets from beyond the arc as Fitchburg State registered nine steals and seven blocks in the contest.

Fitchburg State (4-4, 0-0 MASCAC) will be back in action on in two weeks as it travels to Key Largo, Florida to battle Elmira College at 6 p.m. Mount Ida (4-6, 0-0 GNAC) will host Becker College on January 5th at 3 p.m.
