Worcester State Bests Fitchburg State, 71-46

Fahey notches 14 points in Falcons MASCAC tilt with Lancers

WORCESTER, Mass. (February 5, 2013) – The Fitchburg State women's basketball team fell victim to MASCAC rival, Worcester State University, falling 71-46 on the road this evening.

Junior Amy Fahey (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington) led the Fitchburg State offense with a team-best 14 points and seven rebounds, while sophomore Megan Wodzinski (Littleton, Mass./Littleton) and senior Kelsey Johnston (Shirley, Mass./Saint Bernards) collected 11 points apiece.

Worcester State jumped out to an early first half lead, exploding for 43 points in the first stanza en route to a 43-23 margin. Play remained even for the first eight minutes of the match, but Worcester State closed the frame with an 18-2 run to boast a 20 point advantage heading into the locker-room. The Lancers used a 48.6% shooting effort in the first period, hitting 17-fo-35 from the floor and 3-of-9 from beyond the arc.

In the second half, the Lancers continued to coast, adding five points to their margin with a  28-23 advantage in the half. Worcester State only connect on eight field goals from the field, but the Lancers defense prevailed, holding Fitchburg State to only five baskets in the half and only 21.7% shooting.

For the game, Fitchburg State finished just 14-of-51 from the floor, while Worcester State connected on 25-of-57 attempts (43.9%). The Lancers grabbed just a one rebound margin on the glass, 38-37, but 25 turnovers by the Falcons proved to be the difference maker, leading to 28 Worcester State points.

Fitchburg State (9-12, 2-7 MASCAC) will be back in action on Saturday as it hosts Salem State at 1 p.m. Worcester State (12-11, 8-2 MASCAC) will host Bridgewater State on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
