Cote leads Falcons to first victory of the season with 24 points
NEW LONDON, N.H. (November 15, 2013) – The Fitchburg State women's basketball team opened its 2013-14 season this evening, defeating Colby-Sawyer College basketball team, 77-64 in Friday night's tournament opener.
The Falcons are 1-0 and will play Middlebury on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The game will take place at Colby-Sawyer. The Chargers are 0-1 and will play Middlebury on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. in the final game of the Colby-Sawyer Classic.
Fitchburg raced out to an 11-0 lead in the first five minutes of the game and increased its lead to 13 on a Rebecca Fluet (Fitchburg, Mass.) basket to make the score 15-2. Colby-Sawyer then used the deep ball to get back in the game and eventually take a 21-18 lead after freshman Lexi Iannone (North Haven, Conn.) hit three trey's and scored 14 points in the run. Sophomore Jessica Shenkel (Sharon, Mass.) added a three and a layup to account for the 19 points scored during the burst.
The teams traded baskets to make the score 24-24, before the Falcons used a 12-0 run capped by a Megan Wodzinski (Littleton, Mass.) lay-in to create a comfortable advantage. A three-pointer from Laura Cote (Ashby, Mass.) gave the visitors their biggest lead of the half of 15 at 45-30. Sophomore Katie McCarthy (Mansfield, Mass.) hit a trey for the Chargers to head into halftime trailing 45-33.
Fitchburg did not relinquish the lead in the second half and held a double-digit advantage for much of the frame forcing 16 Colby-Sawyer miscues. The Chargers cut the deficit to five with four minutes to play on a Kelsey Cahill (Cumberland, R.I.) free throw, but the Falcons pulled away after a 14-3 run over the next three minutes. Fluet hit the game's last shot to lift Fitchburg to a 77-64 victory and give Head Coach David Bostick his first win with the team.
The Falcons were led by Cote's game-high 24 points. Fluet added 15 points, while senior Amy Fahey (Wilmington, Mass.) also reached double-figures with 12 points.
