Fitchburg State Soars Past Fisher, 74-55

Four Falcons register double figures in non-conference victory

FITCHBURG, Mass. (January 18, 2014) – The Fitchburg State women's basketball team had four players post double-digit efforts as the Falcons defeated Fisher College, 74-55 in non-conference action this afternoon at the Recreation Center.

Junior Laura Cote (Ashby, Mass.) paced the Fitchburg State offense with a team-best 17 points, three assists, three steals and three caroms while senior Amy Fahey (Wilmington, Mass.) recorded a double-double of 13 points and ten rebounds. Sophomore Megan Wodzinski (Littleton, Mass.) added ten points, six assists and four boards, while junior Britney Payne (Franklin, Ky.) finished the afternoon with a near double-double of ten points and nine rebounds.

For Fisher, senior guard Javana Bernard (Waterbury, Conn.) posted a game high 20 points, four boards and three assists, while classmate Porsha Grayson (Merced, Calif.) registered a double-double of 16 points and 11 caroms. Freshman Alexis Akridge (Union, N.J.) chipped in with 12 points, six rebounds and two assists.

The Falcons were electric on both sides of the ball, earning their eighth victory of the season with 44.7% shooting from the field. Fitchburg State converted on 17-of-41 shots in the first half en route to a 39 point outburst, while limiting Fisher to just 26 points in the frame. Cote led all first half scorers with 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting, while Wodzinski added six points and four assists in the stanza.

In the second half, the Fitchburg State defense was just as good, holding Fisher to just 29.4% shooting and only 29 points. Fahey was strong in the half for the Green and Gold, posting ten points and seven caroms, while Cote and Payne notched six points apiece in the half.

For the contest, the Falcons dominated the boards, holding a 56-39 advantage on the glass. Fitchburg State forced 22 Fisher turnovers with 12 steals on the afternoon, while finishing 34-of-76 from the field.

Fitchburg State (8-5, 3-0 MASCAC) will be back in action on Tuesday as it travels to  MASCAC foe, Bridgewater State for a contest starting at 5:30 p.m. Fisher (5-9, 0-0 NAIA) will visit Pratt College on Thursday at 7 p.m.
